error when downloading 828026
When trying to download the ciritical update for Media
Player KB828026, (either automatically where it appears to load but doesn't or going through the download section), and installing it, I get the following message: ERROR Starting Program ! The windows media Q828026-X86-ENU.exe file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:Nt OpenProcessToken. I read a few other posts and someone directed another questioner to a different page. Unfortunately, the page didn't seem too helpful. Apparently microsoft doesn't have downloades for individual DLL's? I found a place for downloading DLL's and downloaded the NTDLL.DLL file, but this didn't do anything. I still get the error message. I looked in the control panel for deleting/adding programs and did NOT see where 828026 was added to the computer. So that's all I know. I was directed to come here but I'm not even sure if I'm posting to the correct place. I do have WindowsME upgraded from windows 98. So this is where I stand. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks |

error when downloading 828026
Hi Mike, and thanks for responding.
I've downloaded through both the windows autoupdate, whereby it checks you system and acknowledges that it's windows ME, then it tells me I have a critical update for media KB828026. I try to install and nothing happens other then it gives me a big check mark and says I did it. But the auto update will click itself back on eventually and it tells me I have to install again. So I went to the download section of microsoft and downloaded the file. I get an exe file which begins to work and then I get that: ! the windows media Q828026-X86-ENU.exe file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtOpenProcessToken I had similar problems with another critical update MSXML 4.0. I got this message about the file being linked to missing export MSI.DLL:222. Someone in another section of this site directed me to the "fix" for that problem which involved the microsoft installer 2.0 needing to be downloaded. That fixed that particular critical update. This one is the next one and if I get through this last one, it looks like I'll be up to date. Any ideas? Thanks for responding. -----Original Message----- Where are you downloading 828026 from? The error (missing export NTL.DLL...) strongly suggests to me that you are trying to install the version of 828026 intended for use on Windows 2000 and XP rather than the version for use on Win Me and other Win 9x operating systems. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP scrotocles wrote: When trying to download the ciritical update for Media Player KB828026, (either automatically where it appears to load but doesn't or going through the download section), and installing it, I get the following message: ERROR Starting Program ! Thanks I had a similar problem. It might be that one of the updates is designed for a different OS, that is why you get the error message. BUT, if the update appears to load from Windows Update page and then gets re-offered every time you scan for updates, try this: 1. Boot into Safe Mode. 2. Search for any and all WMP or WMP.DLL files and delete them (in my case there was only one). 3. Re-boot into Normal Mode. 4. Re-download WMP9 and then KB828026. 5. Re-boot. 6. Check to see if download is offered again (it wasn't). It solved my problem, hope it helps. |

Thanks Sorry if this is a repost but my first reply has not appeared yet. I had a similar problem. It might be that one of the updates is designed for a different OS, that is why you get the error message. BUT, if the update appears to load from Windows Update page and then gets re-offered every time you scan for updates, try this: Boot into Safe Mode. 1. Click on Start - Search - Files and Folders 2. Type WMP.DLL (type exactly as it is written) 3. Make sure that the "Look In" option indicates "Local Hard Drives" or "My Computer". 4. Click the "Search" button 5. When the search is complete, delete all copies of the "WMP.DLL" file, it is possible that you may only see "WMP" instead of "WMP.DLL" Once you delete all copies of WMP.DLL files, start your system in normal mode. Now, download and install Windows Media player from the following link: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...99/MPSetup.exe Just click on the above link, when "File download" window opens, click on "OPEN" button. This will download and start the installation process. Follow the instructions and re-install Windows Media Player 9.0. After installing Windows Media Player 9.0, we need to re-install 828026 update. http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...26-x86-ENU.exe Just click on the above link, when "File download" window opens, click on "OPEN" button. This will download and start the installation process. Follow the instructions and re-install 828026 update. Once the installation is complete, access Windows Update site and check whether the update is re-offered. Hope this helps. |

error when downloading 828026
Any ideas? Thanks for responding.
I've already given the reason why you are seeing the NTDLL.DLL error. You are not installing the correct version of the 828026 patch from the download section but instead that for XP. Rather than from the Download Centre, download and install the Win 9x/Win Me version of the patch using the link from the associated Knowledge Baser article http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=828026. Make sure that WMP is closed when you install the patch. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP wrote: Hi Mike, and thanks for responding. Thanks Mike, but I thought I made it clear that I DID
download from the correct site. I again went through your suggested excercise and got the same results. I'll try the other guys suggestion and see what happens. -----Original Message----- Any ideas? I'm sorry but if you are seeing the NTDLL.DLL error you mentioned in your
first post you are not installing the version for Win Me but instead that for XP. The KB article to which I referred you has links to both versions. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP scrotocles wrote: Thanks Mike, but I thought I made it clear that I DID download from the correct site. You are a genius . . . . Thank you so much . . .

and thanks again. Your solution was right on the money.
