Why are Win98 USB Memory Stick drivers not generic ?
"Andreas Koch" wrote in message ... David wrote: LOL Thats nice. You always this rude??? I'm not rude. If you want to interpret me rude, thats your problem. and your question is quite stupid. LOL Thats nice. You always this rude??? "Why are Win98 usb memory stick drivers not generic??" Why ask that here nobody here manafactures them. Win98 is quite old now you know and in a lot of cases just not supported anymore. I know that and it doesn't have anything to do with the problem, as far as my technical horizon allows me to recognize. Win98 is able to make contact with any USB device (otherwise it couldn't detect it and ask for drivers). Everything beyond the point of contact is just a matter of protocols. If the "standard usb stick protocol" would be "send 01 sectors wanted address of sectors wanted" then obviously one driver would work for all sticks. So, either the protocols are different - but then WinXP would either have to include drivers for all protocols - which is impossible as there are sticks newer than XP - or XP would have a generic driver and custom Win98 drivers would be generic in nature too but have some artifical lock that prevents them to work with other manufacturers' sticks. I hoped perhaps someone here allready digged a bit in the internals of this matter and can tell me more on the subject from a technical point of view. -- Andreas **************************** or you could contact a stick manufacturer OR Ms and see if they would even respond, you self absorbed pipsqueek. Yes, you are rude, speaking in a logical, dispassionate manner doesnt make you less rude. Remember, NO ONE here gets paid for this, so at least be a bit appreciative of FREE tech advice/help/support/concern. Just my personal thoughts here... EdK |

Why are Win98 USB Memory Stick drivers not generic ?
That's a very good question. Frankly, I suspect USB stick vendors
simply don't want their drivers to support other sticks, and look for thier own brand markers or refuse to work. Remember how one always had to have the "right" driver for ATAPI CD-ROM drive's DOS support, until Win98's generic OakCDROM.sys blew all that nonsense away? -------------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - No, perfection is not an entrance requirement.
