Default Reinstall of Windows 98SE

I would be grateful for some advice on re-installing Windows 98SE.

I have an oldish machine which has had so much stuff installed on it that I
want to start from scratch by formatting the HD and re-installing - I would
like to make sure I get it right!

This is what I think I need to do -

1) Back up entire HD to my new system just in case there are any files I
need!

2) Check I have got the required hardware drivers (in disk form)

3) Format a floppy with system files, format command and CD drive drivers.
(Win 98 is on CD with no other disks).

4) Boot from floppy to A prompt - run Format C: (should I use /u?)

5) Once format has completed, restart from floppy but how do I now get the
CD drive working to run the 98 CD? Will it run from the driver on the
floppy or has that to be on the hard drive?

6) Once Windows is back on board and relevant programs re-installed, is it
possible to retrieve all the Win98 updates - are they still on the MS web
site somewhere?

I know this is not exactly a short question but I would be very grateful of
any help and guidance available.

Many thanks

Not sure what you mean here. If you have a CD/DVD burner, this is where
Nortons Ghost is handy

2) Check I have got the required hardware drivers (in disk form)

3) Format a floppy with system files, format command and CD drive drivers.
(Win 98 is on CD with no other disks).

Just use the Win98 boot disk which has CD drivers built in.

4) Boot from floppy to A prompt - run Format C: (should I use /u?)

Format doesn't really wipe the drive clean. I would use Fdisk then Format.
If larger hard drive I would consider making several partitions.

5) Once format has completed, restart from floppy but how do I now get the
CD drive working to run the 98 CD? Will it run from the driver on the
floppy or has that to be on the hard drive?

Again, the Win98 boot disk can do this. Personally, at this point, I copy
the Win98 directory from the 98CD to the hard drive into a folder named
Win98. Then I install by running Setup from the hard drive. This way you
will not be asked to insert the Win98 CD every time you install something.

6) Once Windows is back on board and relevant programs re-installed, is

Default Reinstall of Windows 98SE

I have found that a "Format C:" useing a Win98SE bootdisk does quite well.
Just be sure you have the Code Key for your Windows program.
With new HDs being cheap. You may consider getting a new HD to install the
OS on. And slaveing the old one. I purchased two "Seagate" 120gig HDs. With
the rebates I got them for $20. each. They came with "Disk Wizard" CDs that
make setting up the HD and transfering all data real easy.
As for the MS updates. If you could find someone with the "MS Windows
Security Update CD/Febuary2004" would cut down the update download time
considerablly.
If you find one make a copy.
If not you will have to go to Windows Update site and do it's scan.
Depending on you internet connection it will take awhile. Once you get the
list of updates at the update site. Write them down in sequence. Do your
update downloads. Then go back to the update site. Select customize at the
left. Check the windows Catalog to be display in "See Also" also uncheck the
language selections unless you need them and save. Then go to the Windows
catalog and choose the search for windows updates. You will get the lists of
needed updates for Win98SE. Here you can select the updates and save to
disk/folder or wherever.
That is where the writen list comes in. Make a folder for each update in
sequence inside folders of what they go to. Such as "IE.SP1" would be
downloaded to it's own folder inside a folder named "IE.Upds". This is going
to take a long time.
You can't really just download all the updates collectively to one folder.
There is no way then of knowing what goes first when rebuilding your system.
I have the "UpdateCD". Plus all the updates copied to CD fron 1999. Plus
the needed updates available after useing the "UpdateCD" in a folder on a
back drive.
Also I have a small 5gig HD that has just the updates( no OS ) and all my
utility programs in exe. form. To be slaved to any HD I might need it for in
lue of the CD.
MS is stopping support for 98 in June. If you want to use 98 for awhile you
will need to get all the updates copied now. Plus any driver updates for
hardware.
Note: Having the "UpdateCD" I only need to install 13 updates after I use
the CD.

Poatt......

Sounds like you are sitting on a gold mine for days that follow.
How much for you to post me a copy of your cd?
I had a guy once post me a book on autocad from the usa, he did
it out of the kindness of his heart, and to help a fellow learner.\

Also, how did you get the updates un-exicuted? Each time I've
updated, I've had to let it all happen automatically.
I never knew updates could be downloaded zipped or similar.

To get the updates to save to/on disk.
Go to:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Under (at left) "See Also" you should see "Windows Update Catalog"
If not? Under "Other Options" Select "Personalize Windows Update"
The first selection is to put the... Catalog shortcut under "See Also".
Save your selection. You can then select the W U Catalog.
There you select what you want and the OS the selection is for and click
search.
You will get a list on top (I think 7). Click on a line in the list and you
will get the uodates available for that topping.
Select one at a time and above the list is a "download to" widow. Select
where you want it to download to.
I would create with a new folder named "Updates" . Inside make a folder
for each type of update,ie."I.E.upds." ,"Win98upds.","DX"."O.E.",etc.
Then in those folders make others for each perspective update.
For example "Internet Explorer 6 SP1" Would go in it's own folder inside
"I.E.upds" folder named "IE6SP1".Also in the folder "IE6SP1" create a notepad
and name it "Read" select the "Read more" at each update. When it's
displayed. Select all and copy the text. Then paste to the "Read" notepad.
Now...you select add at the update you want. then click "Go To Download
Basket"
You will see a Brouse window "Type or browse to the download location of
your choice". Brouse to the folder you created for it and then select the
"Download Now"
button. It will download completely in exe.form.
Like I said...It will take a couple of "full" days to do this.
And...If I let you have a copy of mine? You'd miss out on all the fun.
Have fun and Good Luck.

Don't think some of the USB and Firewire updates are accessible that way.
At least not for me. Found most by accident via applicable MS KB articles
search regarding same.
