Default USB memory stick

I've got a new laptop (Win XP Home). I want to transfer
files from my old Win 98 PC with a USB memory stick.

The laptop regognizes the stick, but the PC does not show
the stick in Windows Explorer.

Do I need additional software? Normally, when I need
software for new hareware, the PC would say (at boot)
something like "New hardware found. Please insert Win 98
system disk". There was no such message.

Please advise.

Regards,
Alan

You need to add Win98 drivers for the USB stick. Go to the support page =
for the device, be very sure you have the right one, find the drivers =
and instructions. Note that it may not even be supported in Win98 or =
WIn98SE, or may only be supported in Win98SE. If you need help finding =
this info, please provide the make/model of the stick and your version =
of Windows. Also, we'll assume that you don't have USB 2 hardware on =
your old system, so you'll want to make sure the stick is compatible =
with USB 1.1

Windows XP recognizes most of these things and installs them with =
drivers it already has. This is not the case with Windows 98/98SE.

You might find it easier if you use a network cable to connect the =
machines, either using a hub/switch and two cables, or a cross-over =
cable, or even a special telco line between modems. All of these =
solutions are rather inexpensive, also. And if you can't make the stick =
work on the old machine, well....

You need to install drivers for Win98.
Visit the web site of the manufacturer if you didn't get drivers with
the memory stick.

Alan,

USB Memory Sticks/removable disc/Jump Drives or whatever
you call them require a driver for Windows 98. Not
required for XP. If you haven't been supplied with a CD
(miniture/single size), you should be able to download
from the manufacturers site. I have a Sony 64KB USB drive
which was supplied with driver disc and a Lexmar 256KB
which wasn't. This was availble via download. Hope this
is helpful

Tom

If downloading and installing the Windows 98 drivers for
the device doesn't work, try disabling any Legacy USB
setting in the BIOS and, if possible, flash it with the
latest update.

I would also see if there are any updates from the
motherboard's site, one of which should be a USB Controller
driver file.

You can identify the motherboard with the Belarc Advisor
from http://www.belarc.com/.
