Problems should I buy new
I have a compaq I bought in April 99, the invoice says it is 450mhz,
128mb 100mhz Syncdram, 13.00gb 5400 rpm ultraDMA hard drive, 6xdvd rom drive, ATI Rage LT PRO 2x agp 2/8mn SDRAM, 4x/2x/24x CD/RW Drive Is there something I could do that is inexpensive to get this to run on the internet better? Modem usage? Would buying a new computer and using the modem work any better? Thanks for any help you can give me. |

New is always happy g I would do one (or two) things: Upgrade RAM to 300+ megs Upgrade to a broadband solution The second is more expensive and not available in all areas. I had DSL with a similar PC, 450MHz Celeron, but with 200+ megs of RAM. I was very satisfied, until I moved and my new location did not have DSL. I had to downgrade to a dial up with a modem. The biggest obstacle in better Internet speed was the connection itself. I also had 92MB RAM and upgraded to 200+ and I really felt the difference, although I don't know how much difference you will feel, since you have 128MB, but an upgrade really does help. Good luck! Faster internet speed is possible with a cable or DSL connection. If you
are using dial up and get a new computer with dial up, you should get a comparable connection speed (i.e., no improvement). -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP Windows 98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "FGM" wrote in message ... Speed via a dial up modem is limited by the nature of the beast. The thing that would make things zippy is a broadband connection, eiother DSL (phone compan) or cable. Either will increase your internet speeds many, many times. dadiOH |

I would change the re writer to a 52x speed.... they are about £20 now |

I know someone who recently purchased a high end machine and with a dialup connection the internet is very slow access. I have an older laptop with 500MHz CPU and 128MB RAM and it surfs the web and downloads just as quickly as does my much newer 1.83GHz system with 512MB RAM, both on a cable hookup. Patty |
