What OS are you getting this error on?
Are you dual booting?
Is this a USB device?
Have you checked Sony's support site?
http://esupport.sony.com/

I believe hal.dll is a 2000/XP file, not 98.

Brian: I will have to check out all your questions. I was running Norton
Utilities and I can't remember for sure when I received the message. I will
have to check that out and see if I get the message again and make a note of
when it happens. I am running on Windows 98.

If the case is that it was reported by Norton Utilities then hold the
phone. Ignore the error message, NU is known for reporting things that
aren't, and does more harm than good.
If you are not having any problems with your Sony device, leave well enough
alone or you may wind up with problems.

Many Thanks!!! After some checking, I did find the "missing file" and my
computer is working OK. Question: I am going to buy a new computer and am
looking at a Dell among others. I use a Mac at school (OSX -- HS English
teacher)Do you have any recommendations?

Glad to hear all is well.

I'll have to leave suggestions up to others. I haven't purchased a market
computer since 1994, all since then are self built.

Dell makes a good system....sometimes you get a little better-quality parts if you
order from their Small Business section rather than from their Home computer
section. A friend is currently looking at their Dimension 8400 series, as they come
with dedicated video cards and the option for either a sound card or integrated
audio, if you use the Customise feature for the model you select. Where I work, we
have some of the less-expensive models and they are serving us well in a very dirty
and dusty environment.
