Explorer - Illegal Operation
Ok.....I just installed a new hard drive......installed Win98.....had
everything working beautifully !!! Then I decided to download the software so that I could connect to People PC. I had the initial downloaded file which I copied for my laptaop. Then I copied it to my hard drive and clicked on it to begin downloading the software. Again....everything was going great....it downloaded the initial files and also ....and then download IE from the web. After that it asked me to reboot...which I did. When my computer came back up I got a prompt to enter a password for Microsoft Networking. This prompt never came up before I downloaded the files for PeoplePC. If I click on the 'X' in the upper right hand corner the box will go away but none of the icons will come up on the desktop and northing further happens....although my wallpaper does appear with no problem. If I click either 'OK' (without entering a PW) or 'Cancel' a box comes up to say that Explorer has performed an illegal operation. And before you ask....yes I did try booting in safe mode and although I don't get the Microsoft Networking PW prompt it will still come up and said that Explorer has performed an illegal operation. This is acutally the second time that this has happened. After the first time I re-installed windows. Again....everything was great until I downloaded the PeoplePC software and was asked to reboot. |

After installing Windows your first course of action should have been to go
directly to Windows Update and dl'd/install the critical updates. IE should have been installed along with Windows, although an earlier version, and would have been updated by WU. You can try this: Go to start - Settings - Control Panel. Click on the Network Icon in Control Panel. Look at the list in the box, highlight TCP/IP. Look at the Primary Network Logon. If it says: Client for Microsoft Networks, change it to Windows Family Logon by clicking the arrow. Close, reboot. See if that gets rid of the logon when Windows starts. Patty |

I was able to correct the problem by using my laptop....(thank
goodness I have another way to access the internet)...and used the solution mention in Microsoft. I had to use the editor and program manager and install IE. After that I rebooted and was able to get on-line.
