Computer does not detect CD Drive
Confirm that is recognised in your BIOS, then try booting with the WinMe
Startup (floppy) Disk into Real Mode DOS, select CD-ROM support. Again, see if it recognised. If so, note the temporary letter allocated and use the DIR command to see if you can read contents of a CD in the CD-ROM :- At the A:\ prompt type DIR X: (where X is the letter allocated above - and note the colon after it!) It should give a listing of the files on the CD and should help prove whether its a failing drive or not. If neither/both tests recognise it, seek assistance from your local computer shop - probably a failed CD-ROM or its associated cabling. If they do, come back and someone will advise the next steps. Computer does not detect CD Drive
I started having this same problem, but please bare with
me. I only have a CD-ROM start-up disk, not a floppy A for it. How can I see if my CD-ROM drive is recognized? I have tried removing the drive and re-installing it, but it says there is no new hardware on re-boot. Thanks for anyone who can help me! -----Original Message----- Confirm that is recognised in your BIOS, then try booting with the WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk into Real Mode DOS, select CD-ROM support. Jill, you'll need to create (or obtain) a WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk.
You can create one in Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | System Disk or download a WinMe startup disk image utility onto your hard disk and create a floppy bootdisk. You can get the utility from www.bootdisk.com BE SURE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS Then follow my previous post. However, it sounds like your "CD-ROM start-up disk" is not a Microsoft retail version, but rather, an OEM version supplied and licensed by the computer manufacturer. In which case, you PC's BIOS *may* have been set to read CD's first and NOT your floppy drive automatically at boot up. If so, it looks (from here) as though you *may* have a faulty CD-ROM drive. Under the circumstances, you may be better contacting you PC manufacturer (or local techie) for advice. Good luck Mart "Jill" wrote in message ...
