Missing Start button
"Mart" wrote in message ... Care to enlighten, Harry? My pleasure, Mart: When right-clicking on the desktop, one can choose to "Lock Desktop items", if I'm not mistaken. See my reply to H's post. Harry. "Lock Desktop items" is not a feature that I can find on my copy of WinMe, nor can I find any reference to it in either Help or on the Knowledge Base. "Mart" wrote in message ... Dean, you may be confusing the 'lock' utility with XP. That option does not exist on WinMe. However, you do have 'Auto hide' (Set to 'off') and 'Always on top' (Set to 'on')options - if/when you eventually get the taskbar to show by right-clicking and selecting 'Properties'. Then simply click and drag to where you want it. Try and hide it on your own computer by positioning the cursor on the outside edge on the taskbar; once you get the double arrow, simply click and hold and then drag it through the bottom edge. Missing Start button
Ah! - The 'Lock (Web) Desktop items' is only available if you elect to use
the dreaded Active Desktop, which we were all warned off years ago - and with good reason too. Thank goodness for System Restore!! However, still odd that there's no reference (that I can find) in Help (other than a very brief 'mention' under Active Desktop) or the KB to the 'Lock Desktop items' string. On the other hand, as HL conjectured elsewhere in the thread, it still doesn't lock the taskbar and Start button. They can still be dragged off-screen leaving the 1/16th of an inch line which Dan mentioned. I did't mean to imply that it was, H, only that Dean may have thought it would lock the taskbar. Hmm... Just as an update, I waited until I visited my dad and, indeed, he had
inadvertently dragged the taskbar over to the far right and there was a visible sliver over there indicating such, to which he was oblivious in prior phone conversations. Actually, it took me a few tries to grab it and move it back and, after I did that, there was a double bar at the bottom and it took me a minute to figure out how to eliminate the 2nd one. Locking the taskbar is definitely a desirable feature of later versions of windows! Thanks all! Dean "Mart" wrote in message ... Good to see your successful update report, Dean. As you have found, it can
be difficult enough trying to 'troubleshoot' over the phone let alone trying to describe (second hand) symptoms over a News Group. Just shows that sometimes you cant beat a good old 'hands-on' approach. Well done for your perseverance. Mart "Dean" wrote in message ...
