Default UNICOWS.DLL stops messenger

Hi,
I installed msn messenger 6.2 but although 5.0 had worked
fine msn messenger 6.2 now won't even start. it keeps
saying that initilizing UNICOWS.DLL has failed!!

I have Win ME and IE 6.

PLZ, any ideas?

unicows is not part of Win Me but is used by a number of applications to add
unicode support to Win Me. One program that installs unicows.dll is Windows
Media Player 9, another is Visual Studio .NET.

See "The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems" -
(http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/h..._announce.mspx) where the
operative words a

MSLU actually consists of two parts. The first part is a dynamic-link library
(DLL)- Unicows.dll-*that is redistributed with the application that the user
creates*.

So, if you have an application that requires the file unicows.dll it should
supply that file when installing the application as does, for example Windows
Media Player 9.

So, do you have a copy of unicows.dll on your system? If so, where is it
located?
