OK, so to correct this: as long as the OEMs still have some XP copies in
stock, they can still install it after that date, but that's it.

dredged up at your request. BUT...

(a) This Compaq 7470 with Win98SE seems to be going well yet,
despite a hard drive crash, 2 monitors gone black & a mouse
gone jumpy. (There was a big scare with the CD-R/W, but it
recovered more/less on its own 3 days later-- miraculously!)

(b) There is EBAY or such as Terhune said, if/when the worst
happens, either for a full machine or a WinXP CD for a Dell,
as you say.

(c) Who knows Vista may have been improved or replaced by then.

noticed about XP is I rarely, if ever, get a blue screen anymore (it sure
seems more robust, for sure).

(b) There is EBAY or such as Terhune said, if/when the worst
happens, either for a full machine or a WinXP CD for a Dell,
as you say.

I guess you could always consider eBay, but it IS kinda nice buying it new
from Dell (they aren't that expensive now, either - as in, under $800)

(c) Who knows Vista may have been improved or replaced by then.

Who knows??? I know! :-) Waaaaaaay too bloated, and always will
be. It has to be, since it's like XP bloated on steroids. It ain't going
to get leaner, that's for sure. I'd roughly estimate the ballpark sizes of
just the operating systems as follows:

Win98SE: 200 MB (nice and lean!)
Win XP: 2 GB (a bit of overhead here, but tolerable for its
robustness)
Vista 20 GB (let's not go here!!!)

And WinXP can run well on 512 MB (and perhaps even 256K) of RAM.
Try anything close to that on VISTA - and FORGET IT!!! You can START with
1 GB (what a WASTE!!)

I could be off a bit, but that's my rough guess-estimation. Somebody can
correct me if I'm wrong.

I can do some banking over the phone with an 800 number. For the rest, I
just walk there. ConEd also will take payments over the phone from a
regular checking account. So will Verison-- but they charge! Therefore,
I still send them a check.

I do my taxes with MS Works Spreadsheet. I then manually transfer the
best outcome to paper. I used to print forms from the government site,
but I ran out of ink 3 years ago. So, I'm back to having them send them
to me. I never did try to do my taxes online-- for fear they might see
the various preliminary outcomes!

That does sound pretty bad! What on earth could it need 20 GB for!? My
primary hard drive is only that big! (But I do have a 2nd of 40 GB.) I'm
sure I would make the same choice you did-- but it isn't my time yet!

What I meant by online banking was that I pay ALL my bills that way. It's
really convenient as I don't have to mail anything. However, I do have
paper bills sent to me. So its a marriage of technologies: incoming bills
are on paper, so I can save the paper records, but all payments are made
online through my bank and I don't have to mail anything!! It's just
deducted from my bank account.

You don't have to do them online. I don't do them online - I use the Tax
CD to install the program on my computer.

I think it would be easier than using a spreadsheet, since the tax forms are
automatically filled in as you make the entries within the tax program -
plus you can e-file the results and not send any paper to the Feds or the
State, which is nice. And of course you can print the results if you want.
The only drawback is that you need to get a new one for each year.

Plus (I'll have to admit this - albeit reluctantly), one good thing

Well, I did have a few, when I was getting down and dirty with it, but I
haven't had that happen yet in XP. I think (now) there is some truth to
it being more robust. But then again, there is a bit more overhead, but
nothing like VISTA (ugh).

BTW, I also upgraded that Win98SE computer with a much faster microprocessor
while I still could get one (from PowerLeap). But they've since
discontinued that specific upgrade since it was so old (my Win98SE Dell
dates back to about 2000, or so, and I originally had an 800 MHz chip, but
now it has a 1.4 GHz one (and after the necessary BIOS update).

Yeah, but time is running out. So I decided it was now or never (back in
January), when MS put out that deadline of June.

And you can't even get XP installed on some OEMs now, as it is. Dell is
nice in that you can, but only on certain models.

:-)

Microsoft appears to have extended the date for XP HOME sales due to issues
with VISTA and need for a RELIABLE OS for ULCPCs.

No, that's only for the lowest end ("ultra low cost") mobile computer
systems, not most of us. So it's basically still June 30.

I normally move Inbox contents to other folders regularly to keep Inbox from
getting too large.

I've never seen anything like this. The contents of a huge file simply
