Default Network issue

Hi

I have a problem with an old laptop that I want to set up with my wireless
broadband connection.

The problem that I have (I think) is that I am missing 'My network Places'
and also missing the IEEE802.1x network protocol.

The wireless USB adapter is a brand new Safecom one and works fine on my
other laptop, which has the 2 missing items above, so it rules out the
adapter. The adapter finds my connection and links up fine, but I cannot
get any web pages.

Any ideas??

Many thanks
TK

From experience, setting up a network using different operating systems can
be frustrating. You may want to consider downloading the free version of
NETWORK MAGIC. It was included with my recent purchase of a wireless router
and it was incredibly easy to use. I know it saved me a lot of time and
headaches. If interested, go to;

Is it possible that you have used TweakUI to remove "My Network Places"?

Correct me, but to the best of my knowledge IEEE 802.1x isn't a protocol
but rather a standard. All that should be needed is the TCP/IP protocol
to network your computer and if by wireless this will be in accordance
with one of 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g or pre 802.11n, the necessary Win Me
drivers for which should be included with the wireless card you intend
using or if not they should be available for download from the
manufacturer's web site.

Hi

Thanks for your replies

Turns out I did have the protocol it was just worded different to what I was
thinking it should of been. Also turns out that it was all connecting ok as
far as wireless adapter & router goes but still had no internet. Don't know
how but it seems to have had something to do with Microsoft network logon at
start up, even though I was putting in the right password, because as soon
as
I got rid of that then everything was fine.

Thanks
TK

I'm glad to read that you've solved your problem however IEEE 802.1x is a
standard rather than a protocol which is probably why you think it worded
differently and don't find it lists as a protocol. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.1x for an explanation of how 802.1x works
using a RADIUS server for authentication. The protocol being used is most
likely to be TCP/IP.
