Can't enable file sharing; secur32.dll needed but not on CD
I am trying to get Windows (SMB) file sharing working on a Win98SE
machine in preparation for migrating to Windows XP, believing that migration will be easier if the two machines can exchange files over the network. The Win98SE machine is a Gateway machine purchased circa 2000 which came with a Gateway-badged OEM version of Windows 98. The machine belongs to my wife who is not technical but is computer- literate and has done a reasonably systematic job of maintaining the system, e.g. installing Microsoft-required updates over the Internet. The machine is connected to the Internet via an Ethernet card and DSL, and all Internet networking has been stable for years. File sharing has never been enabled on this machine. When I explore Network Neighborhood, Windows Network, it informs me that it cannot log on to the network and suggests looking up Network Troubleshooter in Help. When I do this, Help offers to open the Network Troubleshooter for me. When I click on the link, nothing happens. When I go into Settings, Control Panel, Network, there is what appears to be a relevant item named something like "Client for Microsoft Networks." When I examine its properties, they are something like name = 0031415926 and workgroup = OEMworkgroup. When I change the name to my wife's first name, and the workgroup to "workgroup," and press Apply, it complains that it needs "secur32.dll" and prompts me to insert my Windows 98 CD. My wife has a CD album in which she says she has every software CD she has ever received, including all those that originally came with the machine, and I believe her. There is only one "Windows" CD. It has a Gateway logo on it and says something like "Windows 98 Operating System Backup CD." When I insert it, wait for it to mount, and press OK, I get an error message saying that secur32.dll could not be found on it. Any thoughts on a) how I get file sharing enabled on this machine? b) Why the Help system can't launch the Network Troubleshooter? c) Why it should be necessary to install new software just to turn on file sharing? d) Why the files it says it needs aren't on the CD it says I should insert? |

Can't enable file sharing; secur32.dll needed but not on CD

The machine is connected to the Internet via an Ethernet card and DSL, and all Internet networking has been stable for years. File sharing has never been enabled on this machine. You may want to wait on the file sharing until you have XP installed. XP Home and Pro handle file sharing differently, by default "Simple file sharing" is enabled and can be easily disabled in XP Pro. However in XP Home you must log into Safe Mode as the Administrator to be able to disable "Simple file sharing", as well, XP Pro is much more secure when it comes to networking. To make networking and file sharing easier and more secure I suggest purchasing a NAT router w/DHCP that has the number of ports needed for the present or for any future machine additions. I also second MEBs suggestion to check for XP compatibility: Upgrading from Previous Versions of Windows http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...ing/matrix.asp Never mind the XP Pro mentioning, the requirements for Home and Pro are basically the same. System Requirements: Windows XP Professional System Requirements http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...on/sysreqs.asp And to further the process, your hardware/software may not be up to date for XP. You can check by using the upgrade advisor download indirectly he http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...heckcompat.asp or here directly http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...ng/advisor.asp However I would suggest, if you have a friend with an XP CD you can run the advisor from it, the download is approx. 32MB. or check here by typing in the hardware you want to check: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...ing/compat.asp Windows XP Professional Upgrade Center http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...g/default.mspx Quick Upgrade to Windows XP http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...tallquick.mspx When I explore Network Neighborhood, Windows Network, it informs me that it cannot log on to the network and suggests looking up Network Troubleshooter in Help. When I do this, Help offers to open the Network Troubleshooter for me. When I click on the link, nothing happens. See: http://basconotw.mvps.org/98_help.htm There are 2 separate critical updates that caused the TShoot Wizards to stop working. For more info and ways to use the wizards, see: 1st occurrence: If you do not already have "Show All Files" checked in folder options, you need to do that first. To show all files, open My Computer, click on View Folder Options View tab. Under the heading Hidden Files place a check next to Show All Files, Apply/Ok out. Now find the Tshoot.inf file which should be in c:\windows\inf, right click on it and select Install from the popup list. Have your Win cd on hand. Second occurrence, only has workarounds to use the Tshoot Wizards: This is because the latest critical update (Q824145) places a kill bit on the ActiveX control tshoot.ocx. What is not recommended is removing the update or the kill bit altogether as this will open up the vulnerabilities the update fixes, which is more than killing tshoot.ocx. MS-MVP George (Bindar Dundat) has created a fix that will open the tshooter and remove the kill bit. Once you close the tshooter it replaces the kill bit. If Georges utility fails: 810847 was the first crit.update that broke the help wizards functionality. 811630 was a patch that re-enabled the help wizards functionality. 824145 was the second crit. update which broke the help wizards again and "for good". If you do not already have "Show All Files" checked in folder options, you need to do that first. Use find to locate Tshoot.inf, should be in c:\windows\inf. Right click Tshoot.inf. Click Install in the popup menu. Close out and try Georges Tshoot fix again.
