Using w98se and I was trying to install this game 'Jimmy Neutron - Boy
Genius'. The pc meets the minimum requirements, although it recomended 3D Hardware Accelerated Video Card that is 100% 3D compitable . Its seems to 'stuck' for a long time after loading /installing DirectX 8, so I decided to shut down by "power-off" buton and reboot the pc. Now its saying I must re-install windows because " A required.DLL file, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHLWAPI.DLL was not found" Is there a easier way out than a re-install?. Many thanks |

You can edit these in any ASCII editor. Disable the load command by typing a semicolon ; at the leftmost end of the line, then saving the file. You may then find Windows loads OK and you can tidy up other problems. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Sorry did not see your response and so we tried this. Added the shlwapi.dll
(from another w98se pc) into c:\windows\system folder and now it seems to boots up (or think at least its at desktop since the background colour is my desktop colour) and the start appears for a split second and disappears. However, there is not a single icon or whatever on the desktop. When I try to left click the desktop, no dialogue box appears. When I try to boot in 'safe mode'; the 4 'safe mode' words appears at the corners and when it seems to finish loading, the bottom 2 'sofe mode' words disappear. Right click, no dialogue appears. So what can I do next, please advice and will wait before doing anything silly, thanks "Don Phillipson" wrote: "christina" wrote in message ... The symptoms indicate that explorer.exe, the shell, is crashing.
Follow the procedures here -- Recovering From a Failed Internet Explorer Upgrade in Windows 98: http://www.cs.bsu.edu/~gjjones/admin...nd ows98.html or http://tinyurl.com/r5ba Especially the section at the end: "If you still have boot problems after you reboot, you should use the command prompt to edit the c:\windows\system.ini file. On the command line type edit c:\windows\system.ini." "Once it is open, change the line shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe. What you are doing here is changing the default shell (that is having problems) from the Windows Explorer to the old Windows Program Manager shell." Press Alt, F, S to save the changes; then Alt, F, X to close. "Reboot Windows. It should now successfully boot with no errors into an empty Program Manager shell. Use the File | Run | Browse drop down menu selection to browse to c:\program files\internet explorer (C:\Progra~1\Intern~1) or C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files (C:\Windows\Window~1) and launch ie5setup.exe or ie6setup.exe (depending on what is there)." Do a Minimal-custom install "and check all the Bold faced options. When the setup program alerts you that these files are already installed, tell it to reinstall all of the files." "When the Internet Explorer Setup program is done and reboots, hit the F8 key to bring up a Boot Menu. Choose Command Prompt and boot to the command prompt. Once there, type edit c:\windows\system.ini and, once it is open, change the line shell=progman.exe back to shell=explorer.exe. Save and exit the file. You have now set the shell back to the original value." -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "christina" wrote in message news Sorry did not see your response and so we tried this. When I boot from floopy 'system' disc which has 10
files(autoexec.bat.command.com himem.sys etc) and at A: prompt change to C: prompt and type in "scanreg /restore" - it give "bad command or file name" When I use the boot disc that come with the w98se pc, it will give me 2 option " with cd rom support" or "without cd rom support", which do I choose? Am I on the right track? "PCR" wrote: Maybe, first, in DOS, try a "Scanreg /Restore". Choose a date on or before the date of the problem. (Those backups are done at boot, not shutdown.) By pressing F8 and get it 'safe mode' menu and at choose command pronmpt
option, I choose a date that the system was working ok, but it still give me the same result, that is can see the "desktop colour, the start button, the clock' appears for a second and then disappear. Guess, will now have to go thru the labourious task all of you have mentioned. Just out of curiosity, I know the backup date is 'correct', why then the system did not return to its normal working condition? Is it because I replace the shlwapi.dll file? If scanreg /restore did not fix it, you will have to try to reinstall IE as I
described in my reply. Please note: that is not exactly the same method as described in some of the other links given in the other replies. I suggest you try following the procedure I gave you. I forgot to add, if you do *not* find ie6setup.exe or ie5setup.exe in the locations mentioned, you probably did not install IE from a download, but rather, from a CD. In that case, you will have to run ie6setup.exe from the folder it is in on the CD you originally used (or any CD that has the setup files for the current version of IE). Scanreg /restore likely did not fix it because of mismatched files on your system...possibly shlwapi, or others. Scanreg only restores the Registry files and the startup .ini files....it does not touch any other files. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "christina" wrote in message ... Reference to 129605,
what is the source path, files to extract destination path what shall I type for the above questions? FYI, I installed this w98se and at that time I did make win98 directory in C: before I copy the files from the cdrom, d:\win98 Are these the files that I need to copy as staTed in 249191, QUOTE " Re-extract the Shdocvw.dll, Mshtml.dll, Comctl32.dll, and Shlwapi.dll files from the Internet Explorer 5 cabinet (.cab) files" unquote. I suppose it should be IE6 since I did update mysystem with MS Security CD dated Feb 2004 Do I type them individually or rather extract them individually? And the destination path?
