Default Dialup Modem Ports???

On old Win98, P120mhz, IE5.01sp2, 128mb RAM & Dialup ISP.
System and Dialup working fine, but have noticed a puzzlement:

In Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Modem/my modem/
Properties/Modem, showing working properly & Port: COM3.

Then back to Device Manager/Ports, shows COM1 & COM2,
but no COM3. Can anyone explain this?

And, how to determine what is using ports COM1 & COM2?

Com3 is a virtual serial port specially used by
the internal modem and is listed on the modem
property sheet.
COM1 and COM2 are physical serial ports
to be used by other external devices.
Device Manager only show the physicall serial
ports.

COM1 was generally used for serial mouse , COM2 is second physical port
COM3 virtual share IRQ with COM1 , COM4 virtual shares IRQ with COM2

the practise in that "day" was usually to disable COM2 in the BIOS and then
the modem would install on COM2...since both your COM1and COM2 are enabled
....the modem installed itself on the next available COM port

try add new hardware "communications port" and see what happens :

In simple words COM1 and COM2 are
available for anyother external serial devices as you
say COM1 usually for mouse and COM2 for
any other connection like DCC or something
similiar to that.
