Default objects not shown in multimedia tool in control panel

Hi
I am running windows 98se
I have tried to open the multimedia tool in control panel
and it will not display the contents. Nothing happens -
nor error message etc.

It may not have anything to do with it but just before I
discovered this I was trying to download the latest
directx -9? and a patch regarding bus controllers.

The multimedia worked before this.

Thanks

Did you actually install the updates?

You can reinstall the Multimedia components by opening
Add/Remove Programs = Windows Setup.

If not, when you first start the system, try pressing the
F8 key to bring up the boot menu, choose to boot with the
command line (DOS mode) and enter the scanreg /restore
command, then choose a CAB file to restore that pre-dates
the problem.

Not sure if I installed directx 9 as I'm having great
difficulty finding this out.

Tried your suggestions below but no luck.

I found the following on the ms search facility and seems
to point that there may be too much infor info in the file
for it to display. Problem it says go into the file and
take data out - but as it can't be opened it doesn't help.
I have had this with another file (not control panel
related) and it would not open either. Never found a
solution. Any body out there with any ideas?

Thanks

256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS
Under certain circumstances, all objects in the Multimedia
tool in Control Panel may not be displayed. This may cause
problems if you need to configure an object using the
Multimedia tool.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the size of the following
registry key becomes larger than 512 bytes:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

The Multimedia tool reads this key to obtain a display of
objects. If the size of this key is larger than 512 bytes,
the Multimedia tool cannot read the entire list of values
(512 bytes are approximately 50 objects).
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may
cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall
your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you
can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor
incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem, use one of the following
methods:
Remove any unused audio or video codecs, sound card
drivers, or video capture devices from the Multimedia
tool. After the size of the registry key is less than 512
bytes, objects are properly displayed in the Multimedia
tool.
