Robert Macy wrote: Maybe I will need to use some tricks to get them. I need to know those tricks. Are you capable of reading older posts in this newsgroup? Posts made, say, a few weeks ago? 98 Guy, You did write an excellent step by step, but I sympathize with Angel's request after recently having the experience of being forced to search through this morass of spam laden postings, I'm not sure I follow you. I see no spam here in this newsgroup. If you see spam, then it's because the method or server by which you are reading this group is not performing any spam filtering. If you are using google groups (which you seem to be) then you really should do yourself a favor and use a proper news-reader program and connect to a proper usenet server. At the very least, use outlook express and point it to the news.aioe.org server. No registration required, and no spam. And by the way, Angel is using the aioe server and outlook express. My post, with the subject "Modified Flash DLL available here (makes Flash 9 look like Flash 10)" made on June 23, is still available on the aioe server. You know, instead of being a jerk, you could just re-post the info you posted in that other thread, or supply Angel with a link to your older post. The time you've spent belaboring the issue in this thread, you could have already done so. If YOU take the time to search these groups over the past decade, you will find numerous re-postings made of techniques that were already posted or were available on web pages. The re-posts were made because they were useful enough to be repeated....your recent post on the subject is one of those cases. On a web forum, such posts are made into "stickies" that remain at the top of the post listings. In newsgroups, one simply re-posts the info or supplies a link to the older post. That's supposedly why we post here trying to help people. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 A+ http://dts-l.net/ |

Thanks Dan, When I go to places like facebook they request updating to the latest Flash Player to get some videos. Evidently I can't view them. Maybe I will need to use some tricks to get them. I need to know those tricks. Angel, First install Flash Player 9.0.277.0 from the link Dan posted: Flash Player 9 for older operating systems http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406791.html Then follow the instructions 98 Guy posted a month ago, which I have pasted below.... he is apparently too lazy to re-post it for you. WARNING: Be sure to scan the downloaded zip file and the extracted DLL file for viruses before you use it. excerpt However, a simple modification done to the main Flash DLL (NPSWF32.dll) will make it appear that you have flash 10 when you really have flash 9. The modified file is available he http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/...82/NPSWF32.ZIP The password to unzip that file is "a" (no quotes). After you unzip it, rename it to NPSWF32.dll. Copy it over-top your existing file with the same name. It should be located he C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH Before you do that, you should first update your windows 98 or ME system to the latest flash version 9 /excerpt -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 A+ http://dts-l.net/ |

If you use IE to follow the link Dan gave you to the latest Flash Player version, and click the link for Windows Flash Player 9 for Internet Explorer, you will get the correct Flash Player for IE: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/f...layer_9_ax.exe -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 A+ http://dts-l.net/ |

98 Guy, Can't use it. I am using IE. So, back to the drawing board!! Why are you so stubborn that you insist on using IE? IE6 is a VERY BAD browser. It is bad because it renders so many web pages incorrectly. Why are you not using Firefox? Firefox 2.0.0.20 works very well on Windows 98, and it renders web pages much better than IE. If you don't mind me saying this, only stupid fools insist on using IE6, for reasons that even they can't coherently explain. It's very frustrating to offer help to people that insist on sabotaging the effort from the start. |

So, back to the drawing board!! Ah, yes...IE6 is using an ActiveX control instead of the plug-in/DLL, so the tweak does you no good. It's been so long since I've used IE for anything but Windows Updates that I had pleasantly forgotten about it. It will never happen, but I wish IE would drop ActiveX controls....in fact, I wish they'd done so a few years ago. The Opera browser still works with Win98....even the current version. There is an error that comes up that does not interfere with functionality, and can be eliminated with a tweak. One thing I agree with 98 Guy about is that there are much safer browsers to use with Win98 than IE. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 A+ http://dts-l.net/ |

I tried installing Opera 10.60 on a Win98 FE and it never started and gave no indication of what was wrong. Finally uninstalled it and re-installed Opera 10.11. What needs to happen to get Opera 10.60 to run on Windows 98 First Edition? My error, sorry. I haven't tried the latest public release, 10.60, on Win98, and have read that it doen't start when installed. Version 10.54 may be the last version for Win98. 10.54 will run, but gives an error about transparency and the version of msimg32.dll, and loads images slowly. This can be fixed by replacing msimg32.dll with the version from Windows ME Version 9.64 works fine with no tweaks needed. I skipped 10.10 or 10.11 on Win98....did you have to tweak anything for that version? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 A+ http://dts-l.net/ |
