sdelete 1.51 *does* work in Win 98SE

In the string, "shredder won't shred", John Dulak wrote, try sdelete, at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb897443.aspx. Later, in
another post, he thankfully added that although v. 1.51 is described as
requiring at least Win XP, it might be worth a try. It certainly was, John.
The shred that sdelete administered to a trial file defeated Recuva, with
trumpets blaring. Single pass. Thanks, John.

Mysteriously (to me) the IRS type files I had been trying to shred, with no
result, are now gone, gone, gone. Recuva shrugs its sloping shoulders and
retires from the battlefied. How could that happen? Maybe repeated startups
over a period of 2 or 3 days?

Glad it worked out for you and thanks for letting us know. I suspect
that any such program would use low level hardware commands that would
not change much. There is also the fact that it is hard to get
developers to devote time and effort to verify that an application
works on a little used OS even though they suspect it may work.

related, but maybe:
This A.M., internet connection on my '98SE backup box failed. It's not
possible, is it, that running the sdelete for win XP disorderd my net
settings? Using cable, high speed. Tried to repair, but winipcfg crashed.
Error message, "DHCP server unavailable. Renewing adapter". A wild guess:
ethernet adapter card failed. How unlikely? Many thanks to anyone who may
have some comments on this. Sending this on my XP box.

"DHCP server unavailable. Renewing adapter" sounds like your modem and
or router needs rebooted. If you have more than one PC connected to
the internet and use DHCP to assign them IP addresses the router/modem
usually performs this function. Rebooting the modem/router should
force it to assign new IP addresses all around. Can't hurt to shut
down the PC at the same time to make sure everything is starting from
square one. Restart the modem/router then the PCs and you should be
OK. Might be worth checking the cables as well.

It is highly unlikely that running SDELETE is the cause of the problem
since it is concerned with the file system and not the network
connection. I've even run it on PCs with NO network connection.

Thanks, John. Reboot Modem? The only way I know this might be done, if I
understand what this means, is that given me by Cox, the provider:
disconnect power supply from modem, 20 seconds. Have done that, but will do
it again, for a longer time, and see what happens. Will report back

Rebooting for a longer time (before starting PC) - that did it John. All OK
now.
