Default Rhyme but no Reason to System Restore points deletion

Hello all, Dapper Dan, Heather, Mike M, Webster72... Top O' the
Morning to you.

Now that I've had all the sleep I can stand, here's a sitrep...

I'm loosing Restore Points. Yesterday I shot from the hip and blamed
ScanDisk. I've read your insights and thank you for that.

On further reflection, it isn't necessarily ScanDisk. In fact Mike M
has almost convinced me it isn't ScanDisk. I admit I don't exactly
know what it is. I'm pretty sure it isn't my fiddling, unless Mike is
refer to my looking under the hood (in this case, looking at the XML
file list with a text editor, probably Notepad). I'm tempted to
twiddle more but so far I'm holding to the position "if it ain't broke
don't fix it."

And System Restore is not broken. At least not totally. I just
checked and there are five February Restore Points in the kitty now.
On the other hand, when I checked, late January I believe, I had a
dozen or more Points for January but now they are gone. I was unhappy
at that time for loosing a couple about 30 for November and December.

I think It is something tied to the Maintenance Wizard (as ScanDisk
and Defragment are) and scheduled for periodic running thru the
Maintenance Wizard Schedule function. Perhaps the Delete Unnecessary
Files function is out-of-control?

Some times (Most times? I don't recall.) when I have wanted to
defragment, I opted to run it thru the Maintenance Wizard, NOT thru
the Accessories menu. And sometimes I run it in SafeMode (probably
from the SafeMode Help Menus). In regular mode I try to remember to
pull the Ethernet cable from the router when I do this sort of
maintenance. I haven't been turning off the AV. Maybe I'd get done
faster if I did.

ScanDisk has been running fairly often. Related to that, plain old
System Shutdown stopped working a few weeks back. I've been planning
to ask about that but just haven't gotten around to it. Saw that
problem so much with Win98Se that I no longer consider it unusual. A
somewhat carefully timed System Restart is a good work around.

For at least the last month and probably a lot longer, I have the
Delete Unnecessary Files function scheduled to run on the 1st of every
month deleting "unnecessary" 1.Temporary Internet files, 2.Recycle bin
(who was asking about this?), 3. Old ScanDisk files ("in the Root
folder"), 4.Temporary files - HMMMM, maybe this dude?, 4.1 Temporary
PC Health files, 4.2 Application Debugging information. Are
RestorePoints ever considered "Unnecessary Files"?

Anway, I am not dead-in-the-water, I have one or two backup drives.
Unfortunately even the most recent of these is probably a year old.
Kicking out McAfee + ZA and adding GriSoft are the main additions I
can think of.

Can the WinDiff program help out here?

Looking out at the sunshine here, we've had some for the last 2 or 3 days
now thank goodness, we need it to dry everywhere up g it's still cold

LOL!! * Can't remember how long it has been for me.....2.5 years?? Anyway,
the old WinME is behind me and I don't think it is working. *But it did
cross my mind to mess about with it and learn more about stuff.

And this news group is a good place to do that!! *Get Mike to bail me out
when I screw up, grin. *So I totally understand what you are saying.

Cheers from snowy Brampton......I think we got more yesterday than you
did.....Heather

I've been on XP for a couple of years Heather (sounds like a disease,
doesn't it). However my wife's Win Me was replaced with a Vista Laptop a
couple of months ago.
Translation: I can now play with the Me all I want without disrupting
dearly beloved. It's been fun because there is no pressure to fix what I
break, if that makes any sense! Given this NG is virtually dead, I feel
comfortable coming back every once in a while looking for support for
something I did wrong, whether it's related to the Me, XP or Vista.

I have absolutely no problem with AVAST!! *(not AVG) *But then, my
name
is Heather, not Harry!! *(G)

Perhaps you should upgrade to XP,

Perhaps you shouldn't have replied, because you are using XP and this
is an ME group, YL.

It took you 12 hours to come up with that observation?? *And you are the
only one using ME, btw.....other than Dapper Dan. *Time to get into the
21st Century, old guy.

You don't understand system restore do you? Not that that's a problem,
we've all been in that position. Checkpoints are removed on a FIFO basis,
slowly building up until the space occupied in the _RESTORE archive goes
over a certain figure, let's say 80%, at which point checkpoints together
with associated archived files are deleted until the space occupied drops
below another figure, say 50%. Since the number of changes between
checkpoints can vary the space required to store a checkpoint and
associated files varies widely which is why the user variable is the space
allocated to the archive rather than the number of checkpoints.

This shouldn't cause problems as a user has to be either reckless or
desperate to use system restore to roll their system back more than a
week, perhaps two at most. If a user wants to roll their system back
further they should be restoring a back-up copy rather than using system
restore.

I'll leave it others to comment if they wish on the rest of your post
however you might find it beneficial to concentrate on one problem at a
time and start a new thread for each problem once the first has been
resolved.
