Default Windows 98 SE: Windows Explorer asks for Internet connection

| Hi PCR,
|
| May I first thank you for your continued interest in assisting me with this
| 'anomaly' -- it's very much appreciated!

You are welcome.

|
| In setting WE to be viewed as a Web Page, I performed that by opening WE,
| and then from the View menu checking the "as a Web Page" option within WE.
| Then, I clicked View, in WE, Folder Options, selected the View tab, and
| clicked "Like Current Folder";

OK, that's good. Now, I recall, Explorer has become finicky with certain folder settings, last I tried. Change one folder & they all change now, I think. Maybe it was a cumulative IE update that mussed it or some other critical.

HOWEVER, you may have more success doing it in My Computer. Click it on the Desktop, do your settings, & I believe they may stick. After that, they may be intact even opening Explorer your normal way, especially if you use Folder Options to make them universal.

| this method of customization differs from
| yours using button, Settings, Folder Options, General tab, Bolt 'Customize
| based...', Settings button, Bolt 'Enable all web-related content...'". I
| stay away from that process completely, and have never used it on my machine.

Good!

|
| Looks like you have given me much to read and consider, but for now I am
| resolved to accept the plain WE (i.e., 'Classic') as I would rather not have
| to see that annoying window about an Internet connection.

Glad that's gone!

|
| Once I have a chance to look over the materials you have graciously
| presented, I'll follow up and again thank you for following me through this
| rather trivial but perplexing oddity with Windows 98SE (I'm sure that my post
| isn't the only one referencing said quirks!).

OK. Keep us informed. Not many have spoken of it, but I know there is a shenanigan going on with certain folder settings in Explorer! You can't set individual folder settings, last I tried, I recall now. Change one folder, & all of them change! But it was better doing it in My Computer. Let me try that again...

WELL, looks like "As WEB Page" will hold on a per folder basis in My Computer, but won't cross over to Explorer. It will cross over, if you use Folder Options, View tab in My Computer to make it universal.

| | | | Recently Windows Explorer opens irregularly, with a dialog box indicating
| | | | that there is no Internet connection available and halts local browsing of
| | | | files until this dialog box is closed. No dial-up connection has been made,
| | | | yet Windows Explorer apparently seeks one before allowing access to local
| | | | drives. Having searched extensively the Knowledge Base, I cannot locate any
| | | | instructions which might aid me in defeating this annoying habit of Windows
| | | | Explorer (WE). [WE worked fine until this point.]
| | | |
| | | | My question: how do I restore the independence of WE from Internet
| | | | connectivity and return to using WE for local file management without having
| | | | each session to click "Try Again" or [X] (closing) this dialog box to proceed
| | | | with local file management? It seems as though Internet Explorer (IE) and WE
| | | | now have become completely linked and I would rather not have to rebuild my
| | | | machine, as support for Win98/SE will soon be unavailable (a rebuild might
| | | | thus cause me toloose all of the patches from Microsoft Critical Updates
| | | | section) -- WE previously operated separate from IE, was not dependent on an
| | | | Internet connection, and this problem has surfaced only in the last month or
| | | | so.
| | | |
| | | | System details:
| | | | -Windows 98 SE with all critical updates
| | | | -dial-up connection only
| | | | -IE 6.x version
| | | |
| | | | I'm familiar with registry edits, can successfully change said without
| | | | harming system, and am wondering if some sort of registry key has been
| | | | altered somehow to now expect access to the Internet when opening WE (which I
| | | | SOLELY use for local file management; browsing is ALWAYS through IE). Any
| | | | help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, then, keep us informed. You are welcome. I do believe individual folder settings do work in My Computer. I do believe it. I do, I do, I do! One folder setting will cross over to Explorer if/when you make a setting universal in My Computer. After that, you may again individualize folder setting in My Computer, it seems. OK, bye.

Too bad I can't seem to get "View menu, Explorer Bar, Folders" to stick in My Computer, though, or I'd, myself, just use that permanently! But it sticks in Explorer!

| | | Just thought I would update you, per your suggestion!

| | | Thanks again for the help.

| | | You are welcome. Good! Glad to see it seems to be over! Explorer may have come to think it was IE, & therefore requested to go online. They are closely related & can be set to do each others work. But it's best to keep them different, as you do! Keep us informed of any further development or mishap!

| | | | Hello PCR again:
| | | |
| | | | So far, success & thank you -- it appears that your suggestion (2) worked
| | | | upon cold reboot under Classic style; I then proceeded with my preferred
| | | | viewing of Windows Explorer by clicking View and selecting "as Web Page",
| | | | then clicking View again, Folder Options..., View tab, and under "Folder
| | | | views" clicking "Like Current Folder" and performed another cold reboot. The
| | | | problem seems to have gone away for now, but I'll keep all of your
| | | | suggestions locally in a txt file I can access should this problem resurface.
| | | | [Another ommission probably on my part was that I had WE originally set up
| | | | this way -- sounds like I may have to go through this exercise if/when the
| | | | Working Offline issue comes up again.] In each case of testing the progress,
| | | | it should be noted that the computer was NOT connected to the Internet via
| | | | dialup, so perhaps this has resolved the matter for now.
| | | |
| | | | Your fast advice has saved me a lot of hassle in my day-to-day work on my
| | | | (old) machine; I'm very grateful for your assistance.
| | | |
| | | | Best,

| | | | Free online scan. I think it will not effect a cure, but only report.

| | | | Also McAfee. Will effect a cure for certain viruses only.

| | | | |
| | | | |
| | | | |
