system failure

I am running ME but aside from starting up and shutting
down I am able to do very little. I cannot run my anti
virus as I suspected that may be the problem. I cannot
access the internet. I am getting no error messages.
HOwever I do get a program is not responding when I
reboot the system. I was able to defrag the unit after
about 8 attempts and it took about three hrs. I also
tried to find system restore but was unable to as I am
used to xp. also, I started the system several times in
safe mode but was still unable to run norton anti virus.
I have a second computer to work with if anyone can offer
any assistance but it runs xp. Out of ideas please help!

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
