Default "Disk error..."

I randomly get a blue screen with the message "Disk error. Cannot write to disk in drive D. Data might be lost or corrupted. Press any key to continue." I continue with no corruption or data loss. There is no eror code. 2 HDD C is master, D is slave. Installed all W98SE startup and shutdown patches. Reseated memmory, new 600watt power supply(happened before I changed the P.S. Dr.Watson reports no problems during occurence. Used Seagate tools to diagnose under command prompt, everything is fine. No conflicts in device manager. Looks like a hardware error but how to pinpoint?
Thanks for any explanation.

Default "Disk error..."

(1) http://www.pcmag.com/ 's "DiskAction" reports the last 12 processes
that access any partition. It discovered the MS Critical Update
Notification Tool was accessing my HDD every five minutes. That can be
uninstalled in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". Then, occasionally,
"START, Windows Update" on your own.

(2) The Seagate tool proved D:drive is good, can hold it's data.
However, it does not check the Windows file system. Only Scandisk can do
that. I must warn that Scandisk may not do a great job when there is a
great one to do...
http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/scandisk.htm
Therefore, perhaps UNcheck "Automatically fix errors" on it's front
screen. It will then ask whether you want each error fixed. If it sounds
truly horrible, say "No!", and post the log. The log will be
"C:\Scandisk.log". Do not let it constantly restart, either.

(3) Clean up your Startup Group...
First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see
whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up.
If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then
look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't
often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say.
Only last, go to StartUpCop.

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's StartUpCop has "undo", and it is more than a
combination of "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup
Programs" and "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". It can even do a
permanent delete. Of course, first see whether the app has an option in
it's own menus to remove itself from the Startup Group. This is
configurable, and one may maintain multiple configurations.
