Remove saved password
I would like to remove some saved passwords. Specifically passwords for mapped
drives on a network. I mapped some folders on a network drive to the Win Me machine and selected "remember password". But now I'd like to be forced to enter the user name and password to access those folders. The folders are password protected. Because I selected "remember password" upon accessing each folder on the network drive I am not prompted for the password. The network drive is a hard drive plugged into the network that is used for backups and my thought is that if spyware or a virus attacked my Win Me machine it would have access to the backup drive. |

Remove saved password
Hi,
I don't know where that password is stored- probably in the registry. This *might* work to restore the password prompt... Internet Options Security Internet Zone Custom Level User Authentication Prompt for Username and Password. You may also need to set that for Intranet Zone. Hope this helps, Don [MS MVP- IE] "DanR" dan[at]my-olddeja.com wrote in message ... I would like to remove some saved passwords. Specifically passwords for mapped drives on a network. Remove saved password
Unfortunately your tip didn't work. After a lot of Goggling I found references
to Microsoft password editor. This worked and removed the cached passwords. I spent hours experimenting before I discovered this program and the only other way I could remove the saved passwords was to change them. Then the enter password prompt appeared and I then had the choice of NOT saving the passwords. Another frustrating thing about password caching is that "Save this password in your password list" is checked by default. That means if you type the password in and press enter you have "saved" the password. Of course you can uncheck it EVERY TIME but what a pain. I found registry tweak to completely remove the option to save passwords but couldn't find any way to change the default checked to unchecked. The "password editor" (pwledit.exe) is on the Win98 CD but not on the WinME cd. I tried to install it by "add windows components" and browsing to it on the Win98 CD. It acted as though it installed the program but didn't. So I just copied it from the 98 cd to my WinME drive and it seems to work fine. I've "saved" the password again just to see if the editor would remove it and it did. I don't know if this works for WinXP.
