Default CD-ROM fails and out of memory message

Hello!

Win98 SE does not seem to read CD-ROMs anymore. It can eject and load CD's
but doesn't seem to be able to read anything. Can this be a matter of
updating the driver? I use a LITEON LTD 163D DVD/CD-ROM drive.

Also, when trying to run Scandisk from Windows, I get a message telling me
"out of memory, please close any open program and try again". But no other
program is running. Is there a connection here, maybe?

Thanks for any help!

Regards, Oyvind Lyslo

Have you tried cleaning the LENS?

That message can be due to the disk haveing a cluster size which is too
small for the size of the partion.
Run CHKDSK in a DOS Windoe and see what the size of yur allocation units.

How big is the partition.

I had this problem on this computer that I resurrected (it was a P-3 thrown in
the trash). A guy at the local computer shop said Nomad has interfered with CD
drives in the past in his experience. Once I removed that and reloaded Windows
I was able to access my CDR and CDRW.

If you don't have Nomad, this is obviously not the answer. Have you loaded ANY
software just before this happened?

Hello and thanks for helping me!

I've run CHDSK, and although it won't let me run it (Scandisk runs OK), it
tells me that the each allocation unit is 16 384 kbytes, and the total of C
is 80 MB.

I am going to try cleaning the lens on the DVD/CD-ROM, although I am not
quite sure how to do it...

C

This table lists cluster sizes for different size partitions:

Partition size Cluster size
-------------------------------------
512 MB to 8,191 MB 4 KB
8,192 MB to 16,383 MB 8 KB
16,384 MB to 32,767 MB 16 KB
Larger than 32,768 MB 32 KB

So your partition should have 32 K clusters.

quite sure how to do it...

Buy/borrow a CD cleaner disk and use it.
