Default Product Key

I have a copy of Windows 98 1st Edition but somewhere
through the years I lost my Product Key. I have a
software application (Retail Ice) that will only work
with Windows 98 1st edition or Windows XP not Windows ME
which I have a product key for. I don't want to have to
purchase a copy of Windows XP. I'm sure I registered the
product when I purchased it - is there anyway I can get
the product key from Microsoft? Thanks!

Default Product Key

The W98 ProductKey is generally found on the Windows user manual, the
certificate of authenticity, a sticker on the PC or a sticker on the sleeve
or jewel case the Windows CD came in. The 25-digit key is 5 groups of 5
alpha/numeric characters. The Key might be available from the system:

If the system is working in either safe or normal mode:

Open regedit.exe to this key and look in the right pane for the entry
ProductKey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

If the system is not working, start the computer with a floppy startup disk.

At the A: prompt, type: C:\Windows\Command\Find /N "ProductKey"
C:\Windows\System.dat
(Note: ProductKey must be typed in upper and lower case letters as shown
and there is a space after: "Find" after: "/N" and after:
"ProductKey"

If the hard drive has been formatted or replaced, US customers can contact
Microsoft at: 1 800 642-7676. They will issue retail and OEM product keys
after verifying data located on the W98 CD.

Few months back, I installed Windows 98SE over Windows 98 First Edition. All
has been working relatively well since he upgrade. That was few months back.
Recently, for curiosity, I looked for the Product Key in the Registry and was
surprised to see that the Product Key, as well as stored Product ID, belong
to the original W98. The System Tab in the Control Panel shows the original
Product ID, as well. However, both, the Accessories System Information and
System in the Control Panel show that the OS is the W98SE.
Is this normal? Will I have problems sometime in the near future? If so,
what would anyone suggest on this matter?
Thank you!
BP
