Winblows98 control panel and printer panel abends

Every time I try to start my Control Panel or Printers panels lately I get
three abends and the panels don't appear.

The first set occurs when I click on Control Panel. I get abends:
APPXT32.DLL abending at 0167:1007be53
Kernel32.DLL abending at 0167:BFF8AC13
UNKNOWN abending at 0000:00AB7496 with a divide error.

The second occurs when I click on the Printers tab on the Start menu button.
I get the same first two abends as above, and the third is
Kernel32.DLL at 0167:BFF7B9F5

Any idea what's causing this or how to fix it?

FWIW, my kids unplugged my scanner 2 weeks ago and I haven't been able to get
it working (HP ScanJet 5100c). The printer was piggy-backed on the scanner and
it hasn't worked since either. I replaced the ink cartridges, which were empty
or nearly so. Trying to print a test page doesn't work either, and the printer
now has a momentary grinding noise (HP DeskJet 3820). I've uninstalled and
reinstalled the driver software for both of these, but it hasn't helped. I've
also tried disconnecting the scanner and connecting the printer directly to the
parallel port. No good there either. Is this all related, more the Windows
abends to the earlier problem than vice-versa? The Windows abends just started
today.
