WOW!
That was helpful, Mike.
Thank you very much for your input.

So not just My Documents but also its sub-folders.

ScanDisk and Defrag will not run at all in safe mode or normal mode

Just how can one person turn their system into such a disaster? Did you
take a course in computer destruction? Enquiring minds need to know! How
are you when it comes to using a microwave or washing machine? Did you
even bother with a VCR? vbg

Mike/SGB - Re : Thumbnails.

Not really been following this (series of?) thread(s) so not too sure if
it's already been suggested - however, just wonder? :-

At Start Run type
REGSVR32 THUMBVW.DLL
press Enter.
(Note the space between 32 and TH)

OTOH :-
Just how can one person turn their system into such a disaster?

In which case then perhaps the above is not applicable bg

I am trying to explain the best I can.

I open my documents by clicking on the icon on my desktop. I click on
the folder My Pictures Click on a subfolder Click on View Click
on Thumbnail. All that appears are the icons for a .jpg. .jpeg or
.gif image. The actual image does not appear. I was referencing that
article to try to explain what was happening with my system. If I can
only registry tweak it for Win ME as they did Win 2000.

ScanDisk and Defrag will not run at all in safe mode or normal mode
even with CA Security on snooze. They do nothing at all. They get
hung up on the beginning of the program.

Thanks Mart,

Your solution is the one I would have offered if SGB had answered my
question about whether the problem just affected the My Documents object
or whether other folders were also involved. Perhaps I should have thrown
it into the ring regardless and thanks for covering my omission.

LOL!! You remind me of a past poster called Jan......female of course.
She has the same sort of wingy sense of humour that you do. (pausing to
muse on whether that is a good thing or not......8-))

And on checking your IP number, you are WAY closer to Heirloom than you
are to Mike, lol. In fact you are too damn close to a ranch in
Crawford. (G)

You do know that you could help yourself and short circuiting some of
these long threads by answering the questions you are asked. For example
in this case, whether all folders are affected by the thumbnail view
problem or whether the problem is just confined to those in the My
Documents folder.

Given your last comment I feel it best to try and ignore your posts in
future. I sincerely hope you find the answers you are looking for.

You're welcome SGB. To be honest, the old "REGSVR32 THUMBVW.DLL" is by now
quite a chestnut, often caused by installing a third party graphic
program/utility which tries to grab the attention away from WinMe. And, if
I'm not mistaken, was probably originally resolved way-back-when, by Mike
himself.

But good to know that you've hopefully resolved the issue(s) - well two of
them anyway g

BTW - Mike wrote :-

YW too, Mike.

In that case, if you don't have a Floppy and you cannot operate in Safe
mode, you may want to try and do the scan via a CLEAN BOOT mode. If you are
unfamiliar with CLEAN BOOT, please see the following website from Gary S
Terhune, an MVP specializing in Win 98 at the time he issued this
recommendation;
http://www.grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm

While the above applies to Win 98, I believe you can attain the same in Win
Me, by selecting SELECTIVE STARTUP in MSCONFIG and then unchecking
STARTUP GROUP ITEMS
LOAD ENVIRONMENT

Once in Clean Boot mode, you may proceed and do whatever maintenance
required (scandisk and defrag) but please make sure you are not connected to
the Internet because your security features have been disabled.

Hi Dapper Dan -

Floppy drive is removed.

I don't dare install another software program on this system. As the folks
in here can tell you, this ol' computer cannot take much more. I am trying
to keep it running - with help from the great people in this newsgroup -
until next year when I buy a brand new computer.

I only want fix the existing problems.

Thanks so much for the reply.

For you scandisk problems, why don't you try this;
Reboot with a Boot Floppy
Select option #2 or #3
at the A prompt type scandisk C: /surface (note the space after the
colon).

For defragging, I still recommend DISKEEPER LITE because it's free and
effective, however you can pay the $30 or so and get the full version

which
allows you to schedule operating it at your convenience.

Hope this helps.
