Default microsoft works

We just bought a used computer from a reputable store. The
problem is we have Win.98 2nd edition but do not have
microsoft works....only notepad. Please tell me how to
reinstall it. Can I use the quick restore from my last
computer (Compaq-now have HP)?

Every quickrestore disk is different, so it's not possible
to tell whether or not you could use it. The manufacturer
might know. In any case, I think you will find that the
copy of Works supplied with that other machine is licensed
for that machine only. Works is often available on EBAY or
throught internet-based software supply companies.

Microsoft Works did not ship with Windows. It's a separate retail product.
Windows ships with Notepad (text editor) and Wordpad (very simple word
processor). If it came on another computer then this was part of a package
from that manufacturer but not a component of Windows.

It is unlikely that you can use your quick restore because generally, the
first thing that the restore does is to check to be sure that the computer
is the make and model computer that it shipped with. The license agreement
on it is also only for the computer that it was pre-installed on.

Works is available as a retail product and it's extremely reasonably priced
for what it contains - Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Money
Standard, Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia Standard, Microsoft Streets &
Trips, and Microsoft Picture It! Photo Premium. I found the 2004 version
for as low as $31 after $15 rebate.
