See the info in this article for adding that file to your system...the error in the
article is different, but the procedure is the same: PRB: Your Computer Does Not Restart After You Install a Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Application That Includes a MSVCRT.dll File: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330314 However, it is best to find the correct version of that file, based on the software that you have installed. See MS MVP Ron Badour's reply in this thread, for more details than the KB article gives: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...8d0ba5a&rnum=5 quote There are a lot of newer versions of the msvcrt.dll file than what is on the W98 CD and restoring the wrong one might fix this problem but cause others like Office and IE products not working right. I recommend that OP go to: http://support.microsoft.com/default...on/dllinfo.asp and do a search on: msvcrt.dll. On the resulting page, check out the versions of the .dll by clicking on more information. This will tell you what programs contain that particular version of the file. If you have that program installed, that is the version of the msvcrt.dll you should restore providing there is not an even newer .dll further up the list. (Just speculating, I think you might find that the version of the file that is installed is too new and you might have to go down the list to find the right one.) Once you have identified the version you need, use this procedure to replace it (assumes the computer is not booting into Windows). To replace a missing or corrupt file with an original copy, you must locate the file in the .cab files on your W98 CD or from whatever source media that contains the file. (Note: the file may not be in a .cab file and if so, disregard the instructions on .cabs and simply copy the file to a floppy disk.) Using the machine you are posting with, open Explorer and select the folder containing the .cab files. Open the Tools menu, click Find, Files and type: *.Cab in the Named box. Type the name of the wanted file in the Containing Text box and click Find Now. This lists the .cab file your wanted file is located in. Double click the .cab file to see what's in it and right click to extract the wanted file to a floppy disk. Boot with a floppy start up disk--CDRom support is not required. If you do not have a start up disk, make one with the Fat32ebd.exe file located on the W98 CD: tools/mtsutil/fat32ebd. At the A: prompt, put in the floppy containing the file you extracted. Assuming you are replacing a .dll file named xyz, type: Copy A:\xyz.dll C:\windows\system\xyz.dll and hit enter. Once the file is copied, remove the floppy disk and reboot. While .dll files are filed in the system folder, other files may be filed elsewhere so make sure you specify the right folder. unquote -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "CJ" wrote in message ... You should be able to retrieve this Windows .dll from your Windows
Installation CD. Use your sfc http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/using_sfc.html Regards, Emrys Davies. "CJ" wrote in message ... It is a critical runtime file which is including in many, many software distributions, from both Microsoft and third-party vendors. Consequently, it is all too easy to overlay this file with an earlier version. The common industry term for this is DLL HELL. |

Thanks for your response, Hugh, but why the sudden increase in such postings? I suspect a common thread. Your suspicion is probably well-founded. Any comment that I make now would have to be a guess. Perhaps the victims all installed the same update to the same widely-used software product. Maybe an MS patch with an older DLL than the one installed on their PC. Maybe the newer one came from AVG, or Spybot, or Ad-Aware. Or, perhaps the victims did not follow proper installation procedure and shut down everything except Explorer and Systray before installing. If I were to set out to track it down, I'd be probing to find out what each victim had installed recently, and where they D/L'd the software from. A D/L is a more likely cause here, in my opinion. Sooner or later, a pattern should emerge, simply because of the common surge. |

To put it as simply as possible, I dunno.
There definitely seems to be a sudden increase though. I have no data as to what may have been done on each of the computers just prior to the problem. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "PA Bear" wrote in message ...
