Problems re-installing win98 stuck on step 4 of 4
I re-installed Windows 98 two months ago and the system
was working fine until one week ago. When I tried to turn on the pc, it did not go thru its normal progressions. In other words, its was not booting up. It just had a blinking cursur underneath the text as follows; Award Modular Bios v4,51pg, an Energy Star Ally Copyright(c)1984-99, Award Software, Inc. SBA0908 Intel(R) Celeron(TM)CPU at 533mhz _ (blinking curser) So I contacted the makers of my pc and they told me to re- install Windows 98 again. So I began installing it again, but now I am stuck on the last step which happens to be step 4 of 4. (Reloading Windows 98) Step 4 starts as follows: 1. I have started the computer with the Windows 98 start up disk and selected BOOT WITH CD ROM SUPPORT. MSCDEX VERSION 2.25 Copyright(c)Microsoft corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. DRIVE E: = Driver MSCD001 UNIT 0 2. I then typed E: and hit enter. Then I typed SETUP and hit enter to start the setup as the instructions suggest. Here below is the error that comes up: E:\SETUP Bad command or file name IT WON'T LET ME GO ANY FURTHER TO COMPLETE THE INSTALLATION. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP, DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? .. |

Once you get to the E:\ type dir /p and hit enter. This
will tell you what is in the root directory of the CD. It will give you 1 page of content listing at a time. Hit any key to advance to the next page of content listing. Look for the setup.exe command to make sure it is there. Also you should have about 121 MB of *.cab and other assorted files. -----Original Message----- I re-installed Windows 98 two months ago and the system was working fine until one week ago. In the first (the one that ends with "blinking curser") is an indication of a hardware problem. The computer did not complete the POST process and hung up just before it should have listed the ram on your motherboard. If this is all it could do, you would not have been able to even boot to your Windows CD as you describe in the second paragraph. The advice from the manufacturer was WRONG. The person who gave you the advice was incompetent if you have given the facts of your scenario correctly. What I think happened is that your computer does indeed lock up with the blinking cursor but it does not happen every time. That is how you got so far into the install process later in this post. There are two setup.exe files on the standard Windows 98 install cd, one in the root directory and one in the X:\WIN98 directory where X in the appropriate drive letter designation. My recommendation is that you should determine if your hardware is solid FIRST then you should decide if you need to reinstall Windows from scratch. You may find that the actual repair procedure is not so dramatic. charles..... Step 4 starts as follows: 1. I have started the computer with the Windows 98 start up disk and selected BOOT WITH CD ROM SUPPORT. MSCDEX VERSION 2.25 Copyright(c)Microsoft corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved.
