Compressing folders following "HELP"
Good morning, I want to compress some folders so I tried
to do the following per "Help and Support". Right from the start I have a problem because when I follow this I DO NOT get "Compressed Folder" after pointing to "new" Under "file", "new" I do have "WinZip File" is this what I use. If so what happened to "Compressed Folder"? Any help is appreciated. Thank you. To create a compressed folder On the desktop, double-click My Computer, double-click the drive on which you want to create a compressed folder, and then, if you want to place the folder within another folder, double-click the folder. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Compressed Folder. The new folder appears with the temporary name, New Compressed Folder, selected. Type a name for the new folder, and then press ENTER. Notes You can also create a compressed folder by right-clicking the desktop, pointing to New, and then clicking Compressed Folder. You can identify compressed folders by the zipper on the folder icon. If you share compressed folders with users on other computer systems, you may want to limit the compressed folder name to eight characters with a .zip file extension. Related Topics |

You need to confirm that the 'Compressed Folders' utility is enabled.
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs \ Windows Setup Tab - System Tools 'Compressed Folders'. The Description Pane says, "Integrates the ability to view and create ZIP files with the Windows Explorer" If it is enabled but not working, try 'uninstalling' (un-check the box), reboot and then re-enable it again. To open a zipped file - either double-click or right-click and open it to reveal (and extract) it's contents. To Zip a file or folder, use the "Send to.... Compressed Folder" option. 'WinZip' has more 'bells and whistles' - but the built-in WinMe version is perfectly 'adequate' HTH Mart "qvltaurus" wrote in message ... What exactly was the error? Did it refer to setupx.dll? Have you been
using a registry "cleaner"? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP qvltaurus wrote: Mart, Thanks for the info but...when I went to "Windows Setup Tab", first I got an error, rebooted , went back in and there is NOTHING there? Now what please? |

Sounds serious! What was the error report? - it would certainly help if you
knew!! Can't find mention of this problem in the MS Knowledge Base, but do vaguely remember reading of this problem elsewhere - can't remember the solution. Firstly, have you checked your machine for viruses/parasites/etc., using the latest utilities (see elsewhere in these news groups for advice on this subject - it's a daily feature g) Second, try running System Restore back, a day or two and see if you get anywhere. Thirdly, try Start | Run and type SCANREG /FIX in the box and click OK - see if that helps. Do try to remember what the error report said - it might be your only clue! Well, I got two; the first one read:
"Rundll32 - An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click close. You will lose information you entered since your last save." I clicked "close", then I got this one: "Rundll32 has caused an error in SETUPX.DLL. Rundll32 will close now." I didn't try your other suggestion until I send this to you. Thanks so much for your time. -----Original Message----- Sounds serious! *Maybe!!*
If you only ran the registry cleaner (as Mike M suspected) quite recently AND the problem has occured subsequently, then you should be in with a chance. Run System Restore and roll-back to the latest time BEFORE running the reg.cleaner. Hopefully that will restore your settings Mart "qvltaurus" wrote in message ... This is what I expected you to say. What has happened is that you have
allowed the registry cleaner to remove entries essential for the operation of Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup. I can't help but wonder what other problems might have been caused by using that registry cleaner. Your setupx.dll error is usually the result of the user having deleted some empty folders in Program Files that were placed there when Win Me was installed that are used for optional components of Win Me. Then when the registry cleaner was run it removed some necessary entries required for Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup to function because the target folders were no longer present. You can avoid this happening in future by not deleting such folders and similarly not deleting any values in the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set up\VarLDID I would have attached a zip file containing a reg file containing all of the required entries to my reply but since you are using the web interface to these newsgroups rather than a proper newsreader you would never see the attachment. If you want me to send you the repair patch please e-mail me at . -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP qvltaurus wrote: Thanks for your help. Yes the error is a Rundll32 has caused an error in SETUPx.DLL.
