Default 98 missing .DLL file

Hello,

I am having a bit of a problem staring my computer that is running 98se. When I turn on the computer, it goes through the boot sequence, then a dialog box comes up with this message " error starting program, a required .DLL file MSVCRT.DLL was not found" then the computer just stops. How can I fix this problem. I tried staring in safe mode and still get the same message. I tried to boot from the cd-rom nothing happened. I do not know how to play around in dos mode. Can someone give me a solution.

I'm no wizard, but I have had similar problems. In the
past either A)reinstalling windows then updating on ms
site fixed the problem or B)had to reformat. I don't like
to fiddle in dos either, scary place LOL.
Good luck

I had the same problem a while ago and this worked for me:

Copy the file to a floppy disk then on the machine that
isnt working boot to Dos then insert the floppy. Then
enter:

Copy A:\msvcrt.dll C:\Windows\System. enter

Remove the floppy and reboot.

1. Search the drive for MSVCRT.DLL
If you ever updated you probably have a copy
in \Win98ResKit or \upgrade\Win98ResKit.
Just copy it to c:\windows\system.

2. E.g. boot dos and
cd windows
cd system
This puts you in folder
c:\windows\system
Then if the file is in
c:\program files\windowsupdate\win98ResKit
do
XCOPY c:\progra~1\window~1\win98R~1\MSCVRT.DLL
exit
boot Windows.

Raw DOS contracts long folder names to
the first six characters and tilde ~ and a numeral, usually 1.

What did you do just before the problem happened?
Do you run an up to date anti-virus?

You can try a Registry restore. It may or may not help.
Boot into DOS.
Usually by holding down (or tapping) the ctrl or F8 key during bootup until
the StartMenu shows up.
Then select command prompt only and press Enter.
At the C:\ prompt type scanreg /restore and press Enter.
Follow the on screen directions and choose the Registry dated the just
before the problem happened.

How do you boot to dos.

1. Obtain a startup or DOS floppy.
Insert it.
Switch on.

2. Locate the missing file via
CD [NAME] to Change Directory e.g.
CD WINDOWS
and
DIR M*.DLL
for directory listing of all DLL files beginning M.
then
XCOPY C:\[FROMFOLDER]\MSCVRT.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\

Do you have a bootdisk/startup disk? If not, on a working
machine go to www.bootdisk.com and download a Win98se
bootdisk. Just download to the desktop then put in a
fresh floppy and click the bootdisk file, the files will
extract to the floppy. You'll need this floppy to boot up
the non-working machine to get yourself to a A prompt.
With another floppy and your Win98SE CD insert the CD into
the working machine and the 2nd floppy and then click
StartRun and type in "sfc" OK. Use the "Extract one
file" method type in the msvcrt.dll click start then
restore from D:\ or whatever letter your CD-ROM drive is,
then save file in A:\ then OK, when that has copied take
the floppy out. Boot up the problem machine with the
bootdisk and after it has gone through its motions and
you're at a A prompt take out the bootdisk. Put in the
floppy with the msvcrt.dll file in it and type:

Copy A:\msvcrt.dll C:\Windows\System. hit enter

Remove the floppy and reboot.

Hope this helps.
