Default CRYPT32.DLL Error - Help!

Remove NAV and see what happens. Try AVG 6.0 which is free. Run spybot
search and destroy also free.

I was prompted to download a file helper for Adobe Acrobat and I
stupidly did. After the file downloaded, it said to reboot before using.

I
did and got the following error message: "Symproxysvc has caused an error

in
CRYPT32.DLL" "Symproxysvc will now close - If you continue to experience
problems, try restarting your computer." I restarted with no apparent
problems.
I am pretty sure the name of the file was atmo212_enu.exe. It did not
successfully install. A Google search did not turn up any info on this
filename. Afterward my Norton Internet Security (have NIS and NAV 2002
installed) would not allow IE 5.5 to access the Internet even if I clicked
"permit this". The only way I could get on the net was to disable NIS.
Thinking the problem might be in the dll file I followed MS

instructions
for WIN ME and extracted CRYPT32.DLL from the install subdirectory and
loaded it into a folder. When I checked properties, the extracted version
in the folder (5.131.2133.3 which is also on MS site for dll's) did not
match the version in the install subdirectory (5.131.2133.6) I did not
overwrite the CRYPT32.DLL in the WIN system files for that reason.

Version
numbers in the CAB subdir, Install subdir, and System subdir were
identical--(5.131.2133.6)
I have current updates for the NIS and NAV 2002 and also did a cleanup
on my Start Up files. (Forget Restore--- it doesn't work with Norton.) I
also reset settings in NIS and ran a full NAV virus scan. Also use latest
versions of Spyware Blaster and Spybot Search and Destroy which I keep
updated.
Running WIN ME on a Dell 800 mhz with 128 mgb 30mg hd and 56K dialup
connection. I can again access the Internet but, my problem is that my PC
now takes 3-4 minutes to boot up and clicks along like it is having

trouble
loading. NAV virus scan and Spybot S&D now run sloooow. I feel like the
other shoe is about to drop.
Is it possible I still have a worm or Trojan? Any help would be
appreciated.

Default CRYPT32.DLL Error - Help!

Werner,
I decided that since I had already removed NIS and NAV 2002 from my PC ..
then..what the hey...I would take a wild chance and reload it from the CD.
If it behaved as before, then Symantec would be history. But as it
happened, after a reload and several Live Updates, the program and my PC
were working as well as ever. Until my recent hiccup, I have never had a
really serious problem with my AV or FW. As mentioned, I have Spybot and
Spyware Blaster working.

Thanks for the suggested fix for my problem. I really appreciate the
newsgroups and the good things you and the other gurus do. I have learned
an awful lot reading the posts. Also, I hate to say it to the
anti-Symantec (no pun intended) crowd, but as long as it works (and since I
was paid up for a year) I'll have to stick with the product. Keep up the
good work.
