Hmm, seems there may be issues to discuss.

| BTW: I'm now testing a single file replacement supposedly for the large
| file deletion /moving issue, and related issues pursuant other program
|
| [....]
|
| It occasionally surfaces every once in awhile, even recently mentioned
| in one of the discussions as an "off-shoot". Some have a problem, some
| don't..
|
| You can read about the supposed fixes that have been tried, and the
file
| I'm testing here.

|
|
| That's very interesting MEB the webpage you pointed out, with how they
| tried adjusting the SHELL32.DLL to try and resolve that file delete
| problem. I'm glad you posted that link or I may never have seen it. I
did
| of course install the file to test it, but unfortunately it did not solve
| the problem on my 9x partitions available. I even signed up at that forum
| you linked and just made a post about my findings there.
|
| Thanks for the heads up about it, of which I'm glad someone is still
| looking into it, although as days go by I boot to 98SE less and less often
| and so imagine at some point it will be less of an issue for fewer and
| fewer people; however even still I do hope that anonymous programmer still
| comes up with a resolve.

|
|

Rick I downloaded your 2500 file test and ran it through to see if it might
alter my present findings.

Here are the results:

TEST OF SHELL32 FILE REPLACEMENT

2500 files in c:\2500

*with 10% Recycle Bin

no problems with directory delete from Explorer or Recycle Bin

*with 0% Recycle Bin

No problems deleting directory

*Do not move to Recycle Bin

No problems

Test in c:\Upgrades\Microsoft\rdchauvin\2500

Do not move to Recycle Bin

*Deletion by files highlighted, pause while queued, no paper thrown, no
other problems

*Deletion by directory, no problems
---

I noted that your test failed. So perhaps we need to discuss what or why
yours did or why mine did not.

My system:

ABit BH6R2 over-clocked at 133mhz FSB, 733 PIII, 256 mem.
OS 98SE as Microsoft left it at "End of Life support".
IE /OE 6
Running progs:
AVG
Logitech Mouse
Kerio PF
WinTidy
NVidia Desktop
Aureal Sound Control
Explorer
UEdit for documentation
WinZip for extraction
(and the normal stuff Microsoft runs)

Well MEB since I made the Shell98.exe fix, I had also made another install
change from their site afterwards which they had recommended, which was
Copy2gb.exe, and so pressing 6 at the dos prompt to swap the v6 dlls back
to test it again, low and behold I've deleted the 2500 files, and restored
them back from the recycle bin, and did that a number of times, then
pushing it I selected all and copied the 2500 files and pasted into the
same folder now getting 5,000 and then deleting and restoring those, with
no problems. I need to test it a few more times but at the moment it looks
like it may be a good workaround for the issue.

For reference, MEB is talking about the well known:
Win98x with IE6x quantity file delete hang bug

This website says it has the fix for it now, and so what I did was to
install their latest SHELL98.exe fix from this page:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?...ost&p=57213 7
..'once your on that page' then it will let you download the file when you
click the link there called:
http://www.mdgx.com/files/SHELL98.exe
..and as also suggested somewhere in that 4 page thread was to also be
sure to install the other particular Copy2gb.exe from one of their other
pages just in case. Let's see.. it's on this page and called:
2 GB Files Kernel patch now fixes correct API function [SetFilePointer]
...talked about from the middle on this webpage
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?...ost&p=55393 3
..'once your on that page' then it will let you download the file when you
click the link there called:
http://www.mdgx.com/files/COPY2GB.exe

I installed both which are very simple installs just replacing a dll in
each case (kernel32.dll & shell32.dll) ...and so far after a few tests it
"seems" at this point anyway, to be a great alternative instead of using
the IE v5.5 Browselc.dll & Browseui.dll's to solve the large file quantity
delete problem, but also now lets us copy/paste files larger than 2GB in
Win9x which we could never do before.

Read about it all if you want. It takes a long while to read all the
posts, sidetracks, and put together a timeline, and understand it.

Well only time will tell... ..but so far so good, and I will test more
when time permits. I'll have to go over there and make an amended post
after I check it over again once more after work tomorow.

Thanks for the proding MEB..

Rick

Hey, when we actually might have something of value that really fixes a
problem, best we make the effort to verify it.. always nice to be able to
rate something installable and works..

Had me wondering there for awhile... keep me advised, might save more
coding and testing headaches..
FWIW: tested with my standard or not so standard tools, the shellfix appears
to not make any untoward impact in the system [per as advised in thread] or
calls which can't be traced back to IE 6 installations.

But since you have made all these changes, I wonder if it works (solves the
Explorer file copy/delete hang problem) on a system which has not had all
these changes made in the first place. (That is, only changing shell32 on
a system with IE6 SP1 which has not been otherwise modified)

What is also interesting is that these changes were solely made to
shell32.dll, and didn't need to involve the two browse DLL files. So one
might expect that the results could possibly be different, at least in some
cases, and that maybe this shell32.dll workaround is not as infallable (in
regards to the large number of files copy/delete issue) as the 2 DLL file
swap (disregarding the alleged security issues).

Don't know....just throwing this out here...

This machine has unaltered (unused) IE6 with all MS updates for W98.
I'll try the shell32 fix after the Xmas holiday back-up.

The system in which I have tested this, is not altered in any fashion, as
noted in the original post.
It does NOT have tweakui installed, has not had registry changes made, or
any other none standard settings.

As stated, it is as Microsoft left it "at end of life support". There is
one other changed file, a vgx.dll replacement which was not registered. It
does not come into play for this test, though if necessary, the original can
be replaced.
Testing procedures for issues which might be involved or pursuant to the
file test, have included [though not limited thereto] those in a fashion as
described he
http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/re...ys_diagnos.htm - System
Diagnostics - Parts 1 and 2

As noted though, there was:

Test in c:\Upgrades\Microsoft\rdchauvin\2500

Do not move to Recycle Bin

*Deletion by files highlighted, pause while queued, no paper thrown, no
other problems

Which appears to be related to 16bit application/resources.

Default Shell32 file replacement Test results

OK, and I admitedly haven't been following this thread religiously, but I
thought I had read somewhere in here (i.e., one of the responses) that
someone HAD tried it, and it didn't work for them. But maybe I'm
remembering this wrong.

But since you have made all these changes, I wonder if it works (solves

the
Explorer file copy/delete hang problem) on a system which has not had all
these changes made in the first place. (That is, only changing shell32

on
a system with IE6 SP1 which has not been otherwise modified)

What is also interesting is that these changes were solely made to
shell32.dll, and didn't need to involve the two browse DLL files. So

one
might expect that the results could possibly be different, at least in

some
cases, and that maybe this shell32.dll workaround is not as infallable

(in
regards to the large number of files copy/delete issue) as the 2 DLL file
swap (disregarding the alleged security issues).

Don't know....just throwing this out here...

It
does not come into play for this test, though if necessary, the original

can
be replaced.
Testing procedures for issues which might be involved or pursuant to the
file test, have included [though not limited thereto] those in a fashion

as
described he
http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/re...ys_diagnos.htm - System
Diagnostics - Parts 1 and 2

As noted though, there was:

Test in c:\Upgrades\Microsoft\rdchauvin\2500

Do not move to Recycle Bin

*Deletion by files highlighted, pause while queued, no paper thrown, no
other problems

Which appears to be related to 16bit application/resources.

I noted that your test failed. So perhaps we need to discuss what or

why
yours did or why mine did not.

Well MEB since I made the Shell98.exe fix, I had also made another

install
change from their site afterwards which they had recommended, which was
Copy2gb.exe, and so pressing 6 at the dos prompt to swap the v6 dlls

back
to test it again, low and behold I've deleted the 2500 files, and

restored
them back from the recycle bin, and did that a number of times, then
pushing it I selected all and copied the 2500 files and pasted into the
same folder now getting 5,000 and then deleting and restoring those,

with
no problems. I need to test it a few more times but at the moment it

looks
like it may be a good workaround for the issue.

For reference, MEB is talking about the well known:
Win98x with IE6x quantity file delete hang bug

This website says it has the fix for it now, and so what I did was to
install their latest SHELL98.exe fix from this page:

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?...ndpost&p=57213
7
..'once your on that page' then it will let you download the file when

you
click the link there called:
http://www.mdgx.com/files/SHELL98.exe
..and as also suggested somewhere in that 4 page thread was to also be
sure to install the other particular Copy2gb.exe from one of their other
pages just in case. Let's see.. it's on this page and called:
2 GB Files Kernel patch now fixes correct API function [SetFilePointer]
..talked about from the middle on this webpage

Not exactly in this thread, but elsewhere, which thread showed two apparent
failures, one of which was Rick's.
Apparently, it is not even considered as viable now in the other Forum's
thread [which Rick and I referenced], it has drifted off into other far
reaching aspects, much to the dismay of the moderator. Rather like threads
sometimes become here.

Default Shell32 file replacement Test results

"MEB" meb@not wrote in message

Hey, when we actually might have something of value that really fixes a
problem, best we make the effort to verify it.. always nice to be able to
rate something installable and works..

Had me wondering there for awhile... keep me advised, might save more
coding and testing headaches..
FWIW: tested with my standard or not so standard tools, the shellfix
appears to not make any untoward impact in the system [per as advised in

The only difference (as I had mentioned in the other forum) there was one
minor notice with it so far was that even though both now work fine, but
with large quantity (2500) file deletes it's 60 seconds quicker with the
5.5 browse dlls in place as compared to the v6 dlls; however it's true
normally I/we don't delete that many files. (remember though the reason we
had to act before was that it would hang often with just a few simple
deletes, or file renames, or other times for no apparent reason right in
the middle when one was doing something simple, and was a p.i.t.a. to be
forced to reboot - that's why something needed to be done and there came
about the dllswap if choosing to use IE6 for Win9x, or or just stay with
IE5.5SP2)

Yes it seems to work fine so far in this Early stage, and so having said
that one would have to weigh the pro's and con's of it for themselves. For
now I personally will leave the v6 browse dlls in place and get a feel for
it better since it's running fine. Without question I will leave the new
version kernel32.dll in for the ability to use larger than 2GB files in
W9x, and I'll also leave the shell32.dll because ...well because, etc.
It's so simple to swap them back anyway and so why not go forward.

At this Early stage though I see more benefit in using rather than not
using this new way, and, in some sense, it brings my SE partition closer to
(using term loosely) an ms considered more secured state.

Over time we've perhaps put too much energy into this IE6 file delete hang
issue, and for me using WXPro and W2000pro already and logically in many
ways their much better that Win9x - so then why do I still fool with
W98SE.. ..same reason why I keep the same wife all these years I guess,
they may have a few more years on them but they sure are especially
nostalgic with a good history, and well worthy.
