Computer shuts down by itsef while I am browsing.

I am using a Gateway Profile Windows ME. All of a sudden it
shuts down by itself after being on for awile.
The shutdown is not a good shutdown because safe mode comes
up on booting up.
Also when I try to shut down the computer my self it does
not shut down. I have to use the disconnect switch. When I
do that and then try to boot up I get "the computer was
shut down incorrectly" and then it goes into safe mode.
I am going out of my mind trying to figure how to fix it all.
Please help.

Random shutdowns are often the result of overheating - check the fans and
vents on your PC. If there's a temperature monitoring utility, use it and
see if the shutdown temp is consistent - and what it is!
