Netorking with Vista

I "thought" I had installed the DS Client when I ran the DSClient9x.msi.
But, re-reading the instructions, I realized that you then have to run
DSClient.exe from the folder that the msi created.

Now I can see the shared folders of Vista without the IP$ problem, but there
are still issues. If the shared Vista folder has more than a few subfolders
(6-8), then the listing only contains a few of the subfolders and then only
show the first letter of that subfolder (which gives "folder not found" when
selected). Even with a shared folder that opens correctly, it takes 2-4
minutes for it to display a filelist of only 7 files - I can eventually open
the file if I wait long enough!

The Win98 PC is an old laptop P1-133 and I only keep it to program alarm
systems some old systems use a DOS program and will never be re-written).
The Vista experiment was to see what would happen if I upgrade my desktops
(used to backup the laptop data and print). I suspect it's now a timing
issued because of the old PC being so slow, but I don't have a more modern
Win98 PC to confirm that. I'll just keep WinXP for now!

I see the same thing when the Vista computer has "password protected
sharing" enabled, which requires matching credentials (same user name
and password) on both computers. Vista doesn't accept the credentials
that Win98SE sends it, so it asks for new credentials, which causes an
IPC$ prompt on Win98SE. There's no correct response to that prompt.

The problem is that, by default, Vista only uses NTLMv2 authentication
for network access, and Win98SE doesn't have that type of
authentication.

Here are some possible solutions:

1. Configure Vista to allow LM and NTLM authentication:

3. Disable "password protected sharing" on Vista.

I've had mixed results with all of those solutions. Win98SE can
access some of Vista's shared folders, but not others. Sometimes
Win98SE sees only partial contents of a shared folder on Vista. If
you try them, please report your results.

Thanks for the reply. I had previously tried the Vista LM & NTLM option
and
turning off the "password protected sharing" (didn't fix it) but had not
tried the Win98 registry change.

When I tried to change the Win98 registry, it already had a LSA key for
the
passport service, so I just added another key for LMCompatibility (value =
3). I may not have made the registry change correctly, but it didn't fix
the issue either.

I also tried setting-up a user account on Vista with the same ID/login as
the Win98 PC, but no help either.

You're welcome.

You need a matching user account (same user name and password) on
Win98 and Vista to access shares on a Vista computer that uses
password protected sharing.

The registry change isn't sufficient to enable NTLMv2 on Win98. You
also have to install the Directory Services Client, as described in
KB239869.

You're welcome. I see exactly the same problems that you describe
when accessing Vista from Win98. I don't think that it's a timing
issue, because I've tried it on computer with 1 GHz processors, but I
don't have a better theory.

I'm still looking for a reliable way to access Vista from Win98.

Network Neighbourhood on my 98 pc. The Vista machine appears ok, can
click on it and get to the folders, when i click on the folders either
users or public it has taken 4 minutes to open one folder. Sometimes
it doesnt open at all, Task Manager shows Network Neighbourhood not
responding.

I have looked at what is going on in Vista with netstat and there
appears to be a cycle through sucessive ports, 1039 upwards if i
remember correctly, each port is looked at for approx 40 seconds,
anyone know what is going on here?

Have tried most of the advice from various forums, DSClinet and NVLM2,
tried updating the NIC drivers, any other suggestions and feedback
would be helpfull.

Thanks for the many links, have found a way round the problem.
Accessing the vista folders via Internet Explorer typing the path
\\COMPUTERNAME\Users\foldername.
This takes me straight into the folder, have been able to copy and
paste, save and open zip files, its very fast when it works. I have
password protected sharing off on Vista.
This all started working after I tried the Windows Locator change on
the RPC Service mentioned in some other threads, hope this might help
anyone else.
