Default Win XP compatible

Seems I remember there was a URL to go to to find out if your hardware
and software was XP compatible. Anyone remember the URL please? I
tried Google and couldn't find it.

Thanks

Henry

If you happen to know someone who has an XP CD, you can insert it to start setup,
and choose the menu option to check the hardware and software for compatibility.
Otherwise, see Jon's reply.....

Yea, it's a 50M download and I've got a dial-up connection. I thought
there was a place you could go and put in the hardware you have and it
would tell you if it was compatible with Win XP.

I finally got a copy of WinXP. When I put it in a screen came up asking
if I want to check compatibility. I said yes. After running for a
while I got the message "Windows XP setup does not support upgrading
from Microsoft Windows 98 to Microsoft Windows XP Professional. Setup
can not continue".

How did you get it to work for you?

Thanks

Henry

I think you might have an OEM disk which will only do a full install on a
drive/partition without an OS. Don't take my word for it, wait for Glen or others to
answer.

You are absolutely correct. I have an OEM version. I'll keep looking
for a non-OEM version, but I'd bet they are scarce.

Thanks Henry

No they're not hard to find. As WinXP home/pro are the
lastest OS around at the moment full-retail and upgrade
versions are available at any store that sells computer
software.

My guess is the OP doesn't want to purchase one just to run the compatibility
checker. I believe he borrowed one from a friend. It could be scarce for the OP if
another friend hasn't upgraded or built their own machine.
