Wipe & start again
I need to get my PC up and running again - I gave up on
it when it got viruses etc.. How do I wipe clean and re-install everything. With my PC came the following discs etc. A Microsoft floppy "BOOT DISK WINDOWS 98 SE" A Microsoft CD "WINDOWS 98 SE" (A Microsoft CD "WINDOWS 98 STARTS HERE") 2 Microsoft CDs "OFFICE 2000 - SMALL BUSINESS" (A Microsoft Office 2000 interactive training CD) A Computer Associates CD "Bitware for Windows 98" which has Chipsets/Audio/Utilities 2000 SE (????) NOTE: ((I also have a floppy labelled "CD-ROM & DVD Drive Installation Disk" and .... Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition but .... assume they are nothing to do with this PC, but my older one (long since dead & buried).)) Am I being too ambititious? I can't afford to pay someone to do this for me. Can you help? |

NO this can be done. There are several ways though.
How is your HardDrive set up now 1 partition or are there 2 or more. If it is all in 1 it will be a lot easier if more than 1 there a few aditional steps to follow. What type of HD and what size and how many partitions. It seams you have the primary tools to do what you ask, use them in this order. 1. BOOT DISK WINDOWS 98 SE 2. WINDOWS 98 SE 3. Chipsets/Audio/Utilities -----Original Message----- I need to get my PC up and running again - I gave up on it when it got viruses etc.. How do I wipe clean and re-install everything. Make sure your bootdisk is write protected before using it.
Boot the bootdisk Delete the existing partition using Fdisk Reboot (to the boot disk) Recreate the partition using the boot disk Reboot Format the partition Then reinstall win98 using the win98 CD Here is a Microsoft article on partitioning and formatting http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1 Here is additional install information from Ron Badour (it is worthwhile to read it before starting.) http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html -- Jon Hildrum DTS MVP www.hildrum.com "Tara" wrote in message ... It could be a friend or someone you meet at a user group meeting. Setting up a computer is mostly knowledge and a little voodoo sometimes. If you are still determined to do this, here is an outline of what you may have to do but it is by no means all inclusive. Since you/I do not know how deep the virus invasion is, I will assume the worst. Backup any data you want to keep. If it is infected you will have to clean it from a clean computer or yours after you get it clean. Determine what brand/model of computer/mb it is. Look for and install/flash the bios with either the current version or the latest version. Viruses can alter cmos data. Download the latest version of the diagnostic software from the hard drive manufacturer of the hard drive that is in your computer. Run it and do a "write zeros to the whole hard drive". Set the bios to first boot to a floppy, save and reboot. Put in the Windows boot floppy and turn on the comuter. Fdisk the hard drive and set it up with TWO partitions C: and D:. If you are just going to keep system related stuff on the D: drive it doesn't need to be that big - a couple of hundred meg. Reboot after exit-ing fdisk. Format C: without the /s argument and then format D:. At the A: prompt type in "D: enter" At the D: prompt type in "MD WIN98enter" At the D: prompt type in "CD WIN98enter" Put the Windows cd in the cdrom drive. At the D:\WIN98 prompt type in "COPY X:\WIN98\*.*/V" where X is the letter for the cdrom drive. All the cab files should now be in the current directory. Remove the floppy from the drive. At the D:\WIN98 prompt type in "SETUPenter" This will start the install process. If all the hardware is supported from the Windows cd consider yourself lucky. If it is not, then you will have to go out and look for the drivers on the Internet yourself. After you install all the appropriate drivers, do a defrag of both partitions. Then get on the Internet and install all the updates from Microsofts' update site. Then do a final defrag of both partitions and you are done with the OS install part. Now you install any other software you want. Problems can occur at any step. If nothing bad happens you should be good to go. I'm sure this NG will become your friend. charles...... |
