Default Couple of comments on Avast AV.

Can't find it right now but there was a post response a short while
back that mentioned the free Avast AV program. Thought I'd give it a try and
downloaded it and registered. Used it a few days and just un-installed.
Suppose it was always running in the background but didn't care for the hour
glass showing up too often. Usually get a short bizza-bizza-bizza (say it
fast) sound at shutdown but was getting a rather lengthy bizza-bizza with
Avast installed. Assume the sound at shut down is the hard drive and,
having replaced mine a few months ago, I didn't want to pester it too much.
Are AVs and such always active? Do they usually give pause to the system
like Avast seemed to be doing? Sent Avast support an e-mail the first day of
use and hadn't heard back yet.
Will try the the eTrust EZ AV mentioned and hoo-zahed in the long
thread from 9-21.

It WAS summertime and the fishing WAS easy.

Hi Keith,

Etrust is an excellent choice. That's what I use.
I have never had a bit trouble with it. And yes it
is running all the time in the background. But you
would never know it. Give it a try for free, for a year.

You seem like someone who simply can't be bothered going through a few
simple configuration settings to get things as you would prefer them,
and then bitches about how the program doesn't work as you want it.

Did you try using the "Settings" menu? If you'd gone to the 'Common' set
there and unchecked all the options, you would have found that your
'bizza-bizza-bizza' would have gone away, as this was the sound of the
*floppy* drive being checked for viruses on shutdown.

Similarly, in the two 'Update' categories, you could set it for
automatic update of the definitions and/or the program, and set 'Update
(Connections)' for dial-up connection even if you're on broadband.

This way, the only time I see an hourglass in relation to Avast! is when
it's checking for an update.

Slow down, Nigel. I wasn't carping. Just making a few comments - like
it says in the subject line. Don't seem to have much call for AVs and such
and so didn't "bother" to do anything with it. But thanks anyway for your
hints about 'settings' and 'updates'. MAYBE I'll try Avast another day.
Interesting handle you've got there, Nigel.

Sorry - a bit liverish after spending all day with a stepladder and a
paintbrush :-)

It's a long story - believe me!
