| Two separate Windows Update criticals took your Troubleshooters
away,

| Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems. This article contains a
| link to what it says is the equivalent of the Windows Help
| Troubleshooters...
| That's it. But, here is how to get them back when offline...
|
| First, "START, Find, F&F, Tshoot.inf"; R-Clk it & select "Install".
If
| you still don't have the Troubleshooters...
|
| * PCR Pro, I have installed Tshoot.inf, I did last PM.
| My TS's are *working* I can access them in Win-Help?? Should I be
able to,
| Brian says, "NO"!!

You WILL be able to access them, after Installing TShoot.inf, UNLESS you
set the Kill Bit on. Zero is off. The other value (hex 400) is on. My
"Trouble.reg" turns it on. "NoTrouble.reg" turns it off.

Now that you have Installed TShoot.inf, you will be able to toggle the
Kill Bit to good effect. HOWEVER, as I posted elsewhere, turning on the
Kill Bit doesn't undo an Install of TShoot.inf. Does it matter? I don't
know!

|
| *OK
|
| * I copied, exported the my key....
|
| * [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}]
| "Compatibility Flags"=**dword:00000000**
|
| * Yours dword:00000400, does the 400 add/remove the killbit...?? I
know
| mines different, one can carefully modify this within the registry.

You may use "Trouble.reg" & "NoTrouble.reg", now that you Installed
TShoot.inf. The first sets the Kill Bit to zero & gives you the
Troubleshooters. The second sets it to hex 400 & takes them away for
safety.

|
| **** Also, PCR, if you further look at the key above, rt. pane, and
click
| Compatibility Flags.
| OK, and look at Value DATA, mine is **0** which means off or disabled
| correct??

Correct. Zero is off, & you have the Troubleshooters.

|
| * My key has the kill bit disabled correct, can't I change the DATA
value to
| *1* enable/on and wouldn't that turn on the killbit?

No. It must must be set to hex 400, which is decimal 1024. Best use the
..reg's, but to do it in RegEdit...

(1) Open to that key...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}

(2) R-Clk "Compatibility Flags" in the R-Pane, & select "Modify".

(3) With "Hexadecimal" bolted in the requestor on right,
enter "400" (no quotes) in Value data.

(4) Click "OK", & exit RegEdit. No reboot is neccessary.

Now, you have no Troubleshooters. To get them back, put a zero in there.

|
| * Pls. look at your Value Data, does it say *0* like mine or *1* ???
|
| * Oh, PCR... by feeble mind is having problems, big time, more so than
the
| puter. Insert the entire key for me w/kill bit turned on... which is
a
| uninstall of Tshoot.inf, correct?? I will merge the key into my
registry
| and restore the killbit. I will be OK w/no troubleshooters,
Microsoft, did
| take them away, I'm going to just let it be!! I hope I'm clear, trying
hard.
|
| * Just post the key, after kill bit is applied, thanks PCR Pro!!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}

That's how it looks in the Registry. You have already seen how an Export
of it looks.

| (2) Navigate to

|

|
| by
| (a) Clicking plus signs, beginning with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE",
| (b) & ending with "ActiveX Compatibility".
| (c) Finally, click "{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}" itself
in
| the left pane.
| (d) Now, you see "Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024)" in the
right
| pane.
| (e) "Registry menu, Export Registry file".
|
| This will create a ".reg" file of the entire Key that is
open...
| all the items in the right pane & all sub-keys in the left pane (if
| there is a plus sign). Give it a name & location of your choosing,
even
| to the Desktop or My Documents. Then, to undo the following, you
will be
| able to simply click that file, to Merge it's contents back into the
| Registry.
|
| Actually-- name that one "NoTrouble.reg". It will look like...
|
| ...Start.....
| REGEDIT4
|
| [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}]
| "Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400
|
| ...End.......
|
| (f) Close RegEdit. You now have an "undo" .reg, named
"NoTrouble.reg".
| (g) Make a copy of it called "Trouble.reg".
| (h) Open "Trouble.reg" in Notepad. Change the "dword" to look as
| follows... all zeros...
|
| ...Start..of "Trouble.reg"...
| REGEDIT4
|
| [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}]
| "Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000000
|
| ...End.......
|
| CAREFUL: That "HKEY" is one line, with TWO spaces only. One between
| "Internet Explorer", & the other between "ActiveX Compatibility".
Make
| sure it looks that way in Notepad, before you click to Save. Also,
you
| must have an empty line at bottom.
|
| Now, "Trouble.reg" gives you the Troubleshooters. "NoTrouble.reg"
will
| give you security by taking them away. Remember to undo it, after
you
| are done looking at the Troubleshooters.
|
|
| (2) By default, when a ".reg" is clicked, it will Merge into the
| Registry. To alter the default behavior: "START, Settings, Folder
| Options, File Types tab". Scroll to & click "Registration Entries",
| click the "Edit" button, select "edit" in the window & click the
"Set
| Default" button. Now, when you click a ".reg" file, it will open in
| Notepad for examination. To merge it into the Registry, R-Clk it &
| select "Merge".

I finally see it clearly in your responses to me below, I do understand now.
I was trying to be clear, but I guess I wasn't, now the lightbulb is lit!!
I really appreciate your patience...
Brian was trying too, and I fell into a deep valley of confusion/conflict
too!!

I went through this before and I left the TS's alone, cuz like I was trying
to explain, my question, when I posted this thread was not how to apply the
fix... ?? But about doing install via Tshoot.inf which I believed to be a
*not-so-smart* action, which I was questioning, since, obviously you
removing the kill-bit that was suppose to protect you!!

But... I finally get it!! I'm able to use George's shortcut from the
download NOW, my TS's are working and hopefully because I *can't access*
them in Win-help to run pass the main page, I'm *indeed protected* .

Again, forgive my inabilities w/*this one*!! Thanks, for your unrelenting
patience!!

As long as the kill bit is disabled/removed the vulnerability is opened =

removed. Running GG's app removes the kill bit so you can use the =
wizards and once you close his app it places it back, this way you do =

When his app is running the kill bit is removed which opens the =
vulnerability.
When the app is closed it places the kill bit back and closes the =
vulnerability.
The vulnerability is only open while the kill bit is removed.

PCR, you really should try Georges app and do away with the 2 reg files =
you need to click.

OK, then. I guess we are fine, & the Kill Bit will protect us. Yes, your

| MS disabled those Troubleshooters two different ways. Looks like
| whenever they put out a new IE cumulative critical update, one needs
to
| undo both again. Item (1) need be done only once. After that, item
(2)
| may be toggled as desired.
|
| * I just posted, I *fixed* it!!
|
| * I am relieved they no longer work in Win-Help, TY!!
|

| (1) R-Clk Tshoot.inf, & select "Install".
| This undoes the earliest "fix" that disabled them. (That "fix"
| apparently is included in the cumulative too.) It does not involve
the
| Kill Bit. A careful examination of the Tshoot.inf file might say
what it
| does involve, but it looks rather cryptic.
| Therefore, the easiest way to undo an "Install" of Tshoot.inf
(if
| you want to), might be to Remove the last cumulative (in Add/Remove
| Programs)-- & then go get it again. But who knows how well THAT may
go?
|
| (2) Turn off the Kill Bit, as I posted.
| (a) I find this does work to restore the Troubleshooters
(after
| Installing Tshoot.inf once).
| (b) Turn the Kill Bit back on to disable the Troubleshooters.
| HOWEVER, it does not undo an Install of Tshoot.inf. What
| does THAT mean? Am I fully protected by just the Kill Bit? You're
making
| me start to worry, Star!

| | must have an empty line at bottom.
| |
| | Now, "Trouble.reg" gives you the Troubleshooters.
"NoTrouble.reg"
| will
| | give you security by taking them away. Remember to undo it,
after
| you
| | are done looking at the Troubleshooters.
| |
| |
| | (2) By default, when a ".reg" is clicked, it will Merge into the
| | Registry. To alter the default behavior: "START, Settings,
Folder
| | Options, File Types tab". Scroll to & click "Registration
Entries",
| | click the "Edit" button, select "edit" in the window & click the
| "Set
| | Default" button. Now, when you click a ".reg" file, it will open
in
| | Notepad for examination. To merge it into the Registry, R-Clk it
&
| | select "Merge".

| | This is not doubting you but I have reason to believe you do not
| have
| | the 2nd update mentioned installed. The "Windows help wizards"
| should
| | not work thru any of Windows help. GG's workaround app should be
the
| | only way unless you have removed the kill bit from the registry
| | yourself. If you have the 2nd update installed you will have the
key
| | mentioned below with the kill bit (name/data "value") present in
the
| | registry.
| | When GG's app is installed it is what is to be used for the
tshoot
| | wizards, not Windows Help. I thought he explained it in his text
| file
| | included although now that I check he only mentions clicking the
| icon to
| | run the wizards which may confuse some. Windows help should not
be
| used,
| | GG's app is what should be used to run the wizards when
installed.
| |
| | Ok now, after a good nights slumber I have:
| |
| | Booted another 98SE machine which is fully updated and did not
have
| | GG's TShoot installed.
| | Tried the Windows tshoot wizards which failed.
| | Checked the registry for the ActiveX component kill bit which
was
| | present at:
| |
| | HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| | Components\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}
| | Name: Compatibility Flags
| | Data: 0x00000400 (1024)
| |
| | Tried to run the Windows help tshoot wizards which failed.
| | Removed kill bit entry in registry and regain tshoot wizards,
merged
| | entry back into registry and tshoot wizards fail.
| | Install GG's tshoot.exe workaround.
| | Run GG's app and Windows wizards fail.
| | Run Windows help and wizards fail.
| | Right click tshoot.inf and install, both GG's app and Windows
| wizards
| | fail.
| | Reboot.
| | GG's app now works, wizards successful and Windows help wizards
| fail.
| | With GG's app running, check registry entry for kill bit which
is
| | absent.
| | Shutdown GG's app, check registry and kill bit entry is present.
| |
| | All works as should.
| |
| | Reboot 98SE machine mentioned in last post.
| | Still no Wizards with either GG's app or Windows help.
| | Run tshoot.inf install, check wizards which fail.
| | Reboot, all is working as should. GG's app controls the registry
| entry
| | to remove the kill bit when run and replace when closed.
| | Running " Windows help wizards" (not GG's) still fail.
| |
| | I never thought a reboot was required and don't believe I had
to do
| it
| | on the first 98SE when I originally installed GG's app, yet it
| appears
| | this is the case now. Stymies me a little but that's how it all
went
| | down. It now makes me wonder if one has to go thru the
re-install of
| | tshoot.inf, then install GG's app and reboot at some point to
gain
| | functionality due to a later update? For now I've done what I'm
| going
| | too as the wizards/GG's app work (or don't) as they
| should/shouldn't.
| |
| | BTW, both 98SE machines were updated using the Security update
CD
| and
| | finished at the MS Update site. Can't see why but perhaps this
| method
| | has something to do with it. I do have one more 98SE machine
| available
| | to test that does not have GG's app and is fully updated ONLY
from
| the
| | MS Update site.
| |
| | Perhaps Glen has some insight on this.

| Hello group,
| I have a new install of Windows and I have installed all critical
updates,
| therefore my TS's are not working as I would expect.
|
| My question, I do have the fix that MS-MVP George (Bindar Dundat)
has
| created.
| However, it does not restore the troubleshooters??
|
| I know what will restore them... reinstalling them, via rt. clicking
on
| the
| Tshoot.inf file and having my OS CD ready.
|
| I did the above action on a previous fresh install of Windows-98-se
after
| getting all critial updates.
|
| This is the question;..... If I reinstall my T-shooters via rt.
clicking
| Tshoot.inf file, *am I not removing the kill-bit in the registry
that is
| suppose to be protecting me*??
|
| Thanks for clarification.

| I finally see it clearly in your responses to me below, I do
understand now.
| I was trying to be clear, but I guess I wasn't, now the lightbulb is
lit!!
| I really appreciate your patience...
| Brian was trying too, and I fell into a deep valley of
confusion/conflict

|
| I went through this before and I left the TS's alone, cuz like I was
trying
| to explain, my question, when I posted this thread was not how to
apply the
| fix... ?? But about doing install via Tshoot.inf which I believed to
be a
| *not-so-smart* action, which I was questioning, since, obviously you
| removing the kill-bit that was suppose to protect you!!
|
| But... I finally get it!! I'm able to use George's shortcut from the
| download NOW, my TS's are working and hopefully because I *can't

| them in Win-help to run pass the main page, I'm *indeed protected* .
|
| Again, forgive my inabilities w/*this one*!! Thanks, for your

| |
| | Two separate Windows Update criticals took your Troubleshooters
| away,
| | for security reasons.
| |

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q188867
| | Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems. This article
contains a
| | link to what it says is the equivalent of the Windows Help
| | Troubleshooters...
| | http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot
| | That's it. But, here is how to get them back when offline...
| |
| | First, "START, Find, F&F, Tshoot.inf"; R-Clk it & select
"Install".
| If
| | you still don't have the Troubleshooters...
| |
| | * PCR Pro, I have installed Tshoot.inf, I did last PM.
| | My TS's are *working* I can access them in Win-Help?? Should I
be
| able to,
| | Brian says, "NO"!!
|
| You WILL be able to access them, after Installing TShoot.inf, UNLESS
you
| set the Kill Bit on. Zero is off. The other value (hex 400) is on.
My
| "Trouble.reg" turns it on. "NoTrouble.reg" turns it off.
|
| Now that you have Installed TShoot.inf, you will be able to toggle
the
| Kill Bit to good effect. HOWEVER, as I posted elsewhere, turning on
the
| Kill Bit doesn't undo an Install of TShoot.inf. Does it matter? I
don't
| know!
|
| |
| | *OK
| |
| | * I copied, exported the my key....
| |
| | * [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| | Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}]
| | "Compatibility Flags"=**dword:00000000**
| |
| | * Yours dword:00000400, does the 400 add/remove the killbit...??
I
| know
| | mines different, one can carefully modify this within the
registry.
|
| You may use "Trouble.reg" & "NoTrouble.reg", now that you Installed
| TShoot.inf. The first sets the Kill Bit to zero & gives you the
| Troubleshooters. The second sets it to hex 400 & takes them away for
| safety.
|
| |
| | **** Also, PCR, if you further look at the key above, rt. pane,
and
| click
| | Compatibility Flags.
| | OK, and look at Value DATA, mine is **0** which means off or
disabled
| | correct??
|
| Correct. Zero is off, & you have the Troubleshooters.
|
| |
| | * My key has the kill bit disabled correct, can't I change the
DATA
| value to
| | *1* enable/on and wouldn't that turn on the killbit?
|
| No. It must must be set to hex 400, which is decimal 1024. Best use
the
| .reg's, but to do it in RegEdit...
|
| (1) Open to that key...
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}
|
|
|
|
To get them back, put a zero in
there.
|
| |
| | * Pls. look at your Value Data, does it say *0* like mine or *1*
???
| |
| | * Oh, PCR... by feeble mind is having problems, big time, more so
than
| the
| | puter. Insert the entire key for me w/kill bit turned on... which
is
| a
| | uninstall of Tshoot.inf, correct?? I will merge the key into my
| registry
| | and restore the killbit. I will be OK w/no troubleshooters,
| Microsoft, did
| | take them away, I'm going to just let it be!! I hope I'm clear,
trying
| hard.
| |
| | * Just post the key, after kill bit is applied, thanks PCR Pro!!
|
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}
| Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024)
|
| That's how it looks in the Registry. You have already seen how an
Export
| of it looks.
|
| |
| | Thanks, Star
| |
| |
| | (1) "START, Run, RegEdit"
| | (2) Navigate to
| |
| | HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| | Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}
| |
| | Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024) Dword value 400
| |
| | by
| | (a) Clicking plus signs, beginning with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE",
| | (b) & ending with "ActiveX Compatibility".
| | (c) Finally, click "{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}"
itself
| in
| | the left pane.
| | (d) Now, you see "Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024)" in
the
| right
| | pane.
| | (e) "Registry menu, Export Registry file".
| |
| | This will create a ".reg" file of the entire Key that is
| open...
| | all the items in the right pane & all sub-keys in the left pane
(if
| | there is a plus sign). Give it a name & location of your
choosing,
| even
| | to the Desktop or My Documents. Then, to undo the following, you
| will be
| | able to simply click that file, to Merge it's contents back into
the
| | Registry.
| |
| | Actually-- name that one "NoTrouble.reg". It will look like...
| |
| | ...Start.....
| | REGEDIT4
| |
| | [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| | Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}]
| | "Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400
| |
| | ...End.......
| |
| | (f) Close RegEdit. You now have an "undo" .reg, named
| "NoTrouble.reg".
| | (g) Make a copy of it called "Trouble.reg".
| | (h) Open "Trouble.reg" in Notepad. Change the "dword" to look as
| | follows... all zeros...
| |
| | ...Start..of "Trouble.reg"...
| | REGEDIT4
| |
| | [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX
| | Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}]
| | "Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000000
| |
| | ...End.......
| |
| | CAREFUL: That "HKEY" is one line, with TWO spaces only. One
between
| | "Internet Explorer", & the other between "ActiveX
Compatibility".
| Make
| | sure it looks that way in Notepad, before you click to Save.
Also,
| you
| | must have an empty line at bottom.
| |
| | Now, "Trouble.reg" gives you the Troubleshooters.
"NoTrouble.reg"
| will
| | give you security by taking them away. Remember to undo it,
after
| you
| | are done looking at the Troubleshooters.
| |
| |
| | (2) By default, when a ".reg" is clicked, it will Merge into the
| | Registry. To alter the default behavior: "START, Settings,
Folder
| | Options, File Types tab". Scroll to & click "Registration
Entries",
| | click the "Edit" button, select "edit" in the window & click the
| "Set
| | Default" button. Now, when you click a ".reg" file, it will open
in
| | Notepad for examination. To merge it into the Registry, R-Clk it
&
| | select "Merge".
