Okay Noel, here we go: WGA is one place---will have to find others.
Since I don't dwell on the problems at the time of their occurences, I
don't retain a memory of them. Mr Terhune gave a reason that WGA
ignores W98se, but I didn't investigate. Oh! another(today): I was
checking out a performance enhancing tool for Windows(did not really
open it), and it gave note of 'unknown operating system'. I have
Belarc Advisor on my computer(as a tool). How can I use it to gather
other info about my system. Have given up on WGA(or vice versa). Be
gentle, I just got back from a Black Screen of Death in a Microsoft
site.

WGA doesn't recognise OS's that aren't Activated (WinXP and Win2003) -
simple as that.

Just download and run Belarc (www.belarc.com) - you can save the output as
a MHT archive file for review or emailing

You could also use AIDA32 (but that's rather old now, so probably shouldn't
be used on machines less than three years old) -

Noel, I just ran Belarc---tried to print---nothing doing. Is online,
and has no printable option. It updates its report for the system each
time I use it. It lists everything. Why isn't my OS activated? I'm
still using it on the Internet. What is an MHT archive file, and how
and to whom should I e-mail it?

Belarc creates a HTM page (like a mini-website) every time you use it - you
could save that, but it contains an HTM file, and a folder with lots of
graphics in it.... which get separated if you're not careful.
Saving as an MHT archive file reduces that to a single web page in effect,
which can be moved and handled like any file.

You may want to send the file for review to someone (who you trust! - it
DOES contain your Product Keys!!) or to another computer/account

OS's prior to WinXP did not require Activation - merely the input of the
Product Key on installation - XP and Win2k3 require that and Activation over
the internet (or phone) as well. Assuming you are running Win98/SE then you
have no need of either Activation or WGA, and WGA should ignore you (but
they're still getting the bugs out of it, so you may have to run through the
hoops)

Can you print a page off the web OK?? - what's the exact error message when
you try to print the Belarc page??

About two weeks ago, I downloaded something, may have been the scripting
package--I'm not sure, but they had a WGA thing there, and an alternate link
if it didn't scan properly, or whatever, and it downloaded a program (I'll
look for the name--just did, it's 'GenuineCheck.exe') which then gave the
go-ahead for the download after checking the OS.
I didn't check to see what it might have put in the registry. But perhaps
there is still an alternative?

There's not really an error message, but what looks like scattered
frames, making it look fragmented and nearly impossible to read. I
have not seen an option for saving as MHT. Please explain. If the
product key is contained within a certificate or digital signature, or
such, there will be a problem of finding a valid certificate or
signature in my situation. Most are expired or have errors. My
system is W98se.

Ah - what you may be seeing is the effect of too high a security setting..
Go to Internet Options
reset the Security settings to Default on all zones, and try again

To save as MHT....
File
Save as...
then use the drop-box at the bottom "Save as type:"...and change that to
"Web Archive, Single file(*.mht)
