Digital Camera Card Reader
I have a Gateway PC (400 MHZ) with Windows 98 (First Edition) and I am
trying to buy a card reader for my Olympus D-360L (SmartMedia) to get pictures into my PC. Yesterday I went to CompUSA and purchased a Dazzle ZiO Reader and found that it works with Windows 98SE (a later edition of Windows 98?) and the reader device cannot find drivers. In addition, the Dazzle Reader needs a PC running at 500MHZ. CompUSA will take this reader back but it seems like they have nothing that works with my PC and my Windows 98. Anyone have any card readers that do SmartMedia with an older PC like mine? I was looking also at a new printer (HP) that had those camera card reader slots on it and was wondering if, since I am in the market for a new printer, that I just buy one that will read SmartMedia and get it into the PC that way?? Thanks in advance for any advice. Lou Email: |

To your question about a card reader, here's one that I had bought that works very nice with 42 different type cards, and it installs externally or internally which I did, and it also works with W98FE even though I use SE. It's very inexpensive but don't let that fool you, it works very well for me. You can read about it here and is where I bought mine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820300606 ...and he http://www.sabrent.com/products/specs/SBT-ICR42W.htm Rick |

That printer will be an USB device too, so it probably will not work on your system. Try to upgrade to SE. |

I doubt the speed is really all that big a deal. However what you're
seriously missing is USB support that is not found in Windows 98 "Gold" but *is* found in Win98 Second Edition. My guess is that you will not find anything on the current market that will do what you need, only in the "legacy" market. EBay is a good place to begin such a search. (I found a "Fleet" Smart Card reader starting at $2, but can't tell for sure if it will fit your needs.)You need to find an older model that has drivers for Win98 "Gold" and will work acceptably on USB1 or a COM port. Here's a list in PDF format. Though I don't know how current it is, you want older models anyway. http://www.pcscworkgroup.com/compati...ducts-0106.pdf Also, the printer idea might not work either. My guess is that the printer itself may not work on your system, that it has the same USB/USB2 issues as the card reader you now have. But if it says it will work OK on Win98 "Gold", if the Support website lists drivers for Windows 98 (not SE) and you can accept the relative slow speeds of USB1, then it might just work. -- Gary S. Gary, Gold (aka FE (First Edition) are the same thing ..and so yes FE does have USB 1.1 (I actually have an FE setup w/1.1 sitting in this room with me now) ..and so then also yes there are USB 2 Card Readers that do support/compatible with FE and it's USB 1.1 just like the 42in1 Card Reader I've already listed in my first post. Apologies in advance if I missed the point or mistaken though, but if I have please explain. Rick, it wasn't my intent to say that Win98 "Gold" has *no* USB support,
only that the amount of USB support is a major difference between the two versions. I ageree, there are many devices out there that have bridged this lack on the part of FE, but that difference between the two is why you will find most modern USB devices not supported by Win98FE. -- Gary S. : I now have only Windows XP systems, but had a older Gateway and used a parallel port reader for the SmartMedia card. I still have that card reader and would be glad to sell it to you. If interested, send a note to . This is a throw away address that keeps mail for 5 days. I will check that mail for the next five days and if you write, I will contact you back. But as other have told you, you really should upgrade to the 98 Second Edition. Unfortunately, you will most likely have to get the update software through ebay since that software is out of print now. I have a Gateway PC that I bought new in March of 1999 and it has Win98 First Edition. I have a Serial Port and a couple of USB Ports. Did you use a Serial Port to hookup the parallel port reader you have? |

No it was a parallel port device, like printer port! It connected to the printer port and then the
printer plugged into it. I gets its power through a in-line keyboard connector.
