Default Windows Protection Error

I keep getting this error when I restart my computer:
Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your
computer.
Press any key to continue...
but when I press a key, nothing happens. I know the
protection error could be caused by any number of things,
but I have no idea how it occured. One day, I turned it
on... the there it was....
I checked the autoexec.bat to see if someone was just
trying to play some kind of trick on me, it would have
pleased me greatly if that would have been the case, but
as you can tell, it wasn't.
Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks.

Can you start in Safe Mode? Tap the F8 key repeatedly before Windows starts
up to get into Safe Mode.

If your computer is more than a few years old,
the very first thing that I would do
would be to replace the CMOS battery.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
