Default Low Disk Space Error Message

Hi All, I'm back...Grrrrrrrrrr!

About a 1/2 hour ago, I began seeing a computer icon pop-up in my system
tray displaying the message: "Disk Space Low."

I know something happened that is causing my memory to get sucked-up. Can
anyone tell me what to do to remedy this problem.

My OS is Windows ME (the worst OS in computer history), and I already tried
a System Restore, which did NOT work!

Thanks,
Shani

From your description a couple of possibilities spring to mind
1) You're using Norton
2) Norton has broken System Restore

check out System Restore by going to Windows Explorer - set Folder Options
so that you can View Hidden and System files.
Navigate to the C:\_Restore folder, and r-click on its icon - select
Properties
How many files and folder are there?
How much disk space is it using?
How big is your C:\Drive??

Hi Noel,

I'm confused.....lol

I did as you said, but not sure if I'm doing it correctly.

I already had my view options set to "show hidden files and folders" in
Windows Explorer. I then did a search for "C:\_Restore folder" and 34
different folders appeared; however, the "C:\_Restore" folder is FADED OUT.

What should I do? I am receiving the message "YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF DISK
SPACE ON LOCAL DISK (C)" right now!

Then you've also received the message "would you like to clean it up?"

Yes Rick, I did recieve that message, but "cleaning it up" it not resolving
the problem because I receive the same message 20 minutes later.

This problem goes well beyond the obvious. I should not be running out of
memory. In fact, I should not even be coming close to "low disk space."

I came across this problem a while back and was greatly helped by people
HERE, but I simply cannot remember the remedy that ultimately worked.

Boot into Safe Mode and give a shot at DiskCleanup from there. While
you're there snoop around see if you have any *huge* directories lurking
in the shadows.

Next time you get that message in Normal Mode, take a quick check at the
number (and size) of files in your C:WINDOWS\TEMP directory and also the
size of the file C:\WIN386.SWP.

If you have 34 folders within the C:\_Restore archive, then you definitely
have a problem!!!

Please try and answer the questions I first asked - then try this.....

Boot to DOS, using your Startup Disk (if you don't have one and can't make
one from Start | Add/Remove Programs, then download a diskmaker from
www.bootdisk.com, and create the floppy by running the file)

At the A:\ prompt, type the following commands (followed by [return])

ATTRIB -S -R -H C:\_RESTORE

REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

When the A:\ prompt returns, remove the floppy, and reboot the PC. The
Control Files will be rebuilt, and a Restore point should be created.

Then delete the C:\OLDREST folder, and reboot again.

Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder

See what happens with your free disk space then (OH! - and get rid of
Norton, and get an AV that works *with* ME rather than against it!)

Noel,

It is possible but pretty rare for deleted folders to be temporarily
stored in the C:\_RESTORE\TEMP folder.

Guys, I am at a serious impass here.....

My "A" drive is not working; therefore, I cannot create a "start-up" disk or
boot to DOS.

I am at my wits end.

Should I run "Hijackthis?"

Oh, I just realized something. When I go to my "System" from the control
panel and click on "Troubleshooting," the "Disable System Restore" box is
checked. I keep UNCHECKING it but it keeps RECHECKING ITSELF.

What's going on here??????????
