Default Low Disk Space Error Message

I keep getting a low disk error message in my system tray.
I have more than enough disk space; therefore, can
somebody please tell me what could be causing this problem.

Although, I have the Windows ME OS, I also have installed
Windows XP.

Thanks!

Which partition does it refer to? one could be low and the other very
spacious.

Hi Mike,

It says: "You are running out of disk apace on Local Disk
(C)."

I don't know what to do because I need all my inastalled
programs and I always run "Scan Disk" and "Disk
Defragmentor" to keep the hard drive clean.

What should I do?

Open Windows Explorer

Right-click on the C: drive icon, and select Properties - how much free
space is there, and what's the total size used?
How many hard drives are showing?

close that pop-up, then go to Tools|Folder Options
Select the View tab
about 5 or 6 lines down in the window, there should be a line
'Show hidden files and folders' - put the checkmark nest to that one
a little lower, there's another line
'Hide protected Operating system files and folders'
UNcheck that one
Click OK
now double-click on the C: drive icon, and look for the _Restore folder
R-click on that one, and select Properties - how much space is it using?

post back with that info, and we'll see what we've got

Hi Noel,

On the Local Disk Properties is says:

Used Space (blue color): 39,987,937,280 bytes (37.2 GB)
Free Space (pink color): 34,668,544 bytes (33.0 MB)
Capacity: 40,022,605,824 bytes (37.2 GB)

In other words, I have ALMOST NO AVAILABLE SPACE LEFT ON
MY LOCAL DISK! )

I CHECKED the "Show hidden files and UNCHECKED the "'Hide
protected Operating system files and folders."

The _Restore propeties folders says:

Location: C:\
Size: 1.32GB (1,426,895,250 bytes)
Size on disk: 1.83GB (1,972,797,440 bytes)
Contains: 18,985 Files, 5 Folders

I hope this info helps you figure out the problem because
I'm getting that DUMB error as I'm typing this message and
it's driving me nuts!

Thanks Much!

Well, it eliminates one possible cause of your problem - but does in fact
indicated that System Restore may be broken!!
Have you perhaps attempted to manually edit files within the _Restore
archive in the past? - or used the Trend SysClean product? - or tried to
reset System Restore?

Whatever, System Restore is takingup way too much space on your PC - I'd
recommend resizing the archive to around 4-600MB
adjust the space allocated to the restore folder, using
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk
adjust the restore slider to one notch above the lowest (around 500MB).
300MB is sufficient to hold 10-15
days worth of restore points, unless you are doing a lot of
installs/uninstalls, or installing large applications (such as Office).

That should relieve the immediate problem.

You then need to make sure that System Restore is working properly - look
here for a test
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/quiktipsr.htm

Assuming all is well, then you have a little time to work out what is
chewing up the space on your HD.
First - reboot to Safe Mode and empty the C:\Windows\Temp folder
then empty the TIF from Internet Options - check the pop-up to delete
Offline content also, and then limit the TIF to 40MB in Settings
Empty the Recycle Bin, and then reboot to Safe Mode (watch for warnings of
missing files!)

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.
