Internet Connection affected by dialer STATUS !
Is there some way I can make the dialer 'Status Window' STAY
UP AS A WINDOW instead of allowing it to go down to the lower right "System Tray" as an Icon? Believe it or not - my system works much better if the dialer status window is active and running versus allowing it to go down as an icon in the System Tray of Windows and run in the background !!! I have asked at 'Windows Annoyances' and never gotten a satisfactory answer. What I am observing is a FACT ! I have tried it both ways for days and when the Status Window is active, I get no stoppages, hang-ups, delays, etc.... So, I am now looking for some control panel, file, whatever that controls the damned thing so I can keep it 'maximized' as it were. I have a 56K 'Windows Modem', a 750 MHz AMD clone with 256 MB RAM, an 80 GB HD, and using Win 98 SE ver 4.10.2222 A. HELP! Please....... What you are reporting makes no sense; however, I have experienced a few
valid problems that make no sense G. What happens if you don't display it in the tray at all? Open Explorer to your DUN folder, left click it once, in the right pane, right click your ISP connection, properties, configure button, options tab and remove the mark from: Display modem status -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "*** Doctor Bill ***" wrote in message ... OK. I did that. What is that supposed to do?
Yes, I have been told it makes no sense, but it is a fact. This posting is to attempt to find out why it works for me. BTW - I am new (Today) to this Newsgroup. I appears that one "Top Posts" to this NG, correct? WAF... Welcome to the newsgroup. Might I suggest that you use a phony email
address like instead of a valid address. When your address is posted in a public forum like this, you will undoubtedly start getting spam and emails with a virus attached. There are still people who persist in bottom posting and if that is what they are comfortable with, so be it. Bottom posting, as far as I can determine, is dictated by an archaic set of rules dreamed up by someone who had nothing better to do. I personally think top posting is much easier to follow and I wish everyone would post that way. What my suggestion does is keep the dial up screen from minimizing in the system tray. I don't know that it will help a bit but at least it is something you can try. As far as finding out why your machine behaves that way, good luck. I have been hanging around these newsgroups since 1996 (first W95 and then W98) and have never seen anyone post your problem. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "*** Doctor Bill ***" wrote in message ... "Windows modem" is a software modem using part of the main processor time to
run communications (I know it is on a card but that makes no difference) it may be that with the process minimised to the tray it has a lower priority and does not receive sufficient attention to keep the connection active, you could try "processview" or one of the other running process guides to alter the prioirity of the modem when minimised, I like processview because it does not stay resident when run, less overhead, speaking of overhead, what else do you have running that a 700mhz processor cant time slice enough to keep a winmodem happy -- Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Etrust/Vet/CA.online Antivirus scan http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/ActiveScan/ Catalog of removal tools http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters "*** Doctor Bill ***" wrote in message ... | OK. Thanks for the E-Mail advice. On another Newsgroup
(NetScape), I use the return address you now see. I FORGOT TO ATTEND TO THAT ! The Netscape newsgroup insists on bottom posting, so I'm used to it. I did not have the checked item you suggested to uncheck - so it has nothing to do with keeping the dialer window up, apparently. I wish some Guru at Microsoft could tell me what is going on.... Not likely. WAF... Ron Badour - said the following on 7/21/04 9:48 AM: Welcome to the newsgroup. Might I suggest that you use a phony email address like instead of a valid address. Try turning off Rampage at startup, and see if your online performance improves with
the tray icon visible. RAM -freeing utilities tend to do more harm than good in Win98. SETI is a great processor hog, so your problem using a Winmodem could well be related to that. As for Ron's suggestion about disabling the tray icon, you stated that the box for that was not checked. Check it, click OK/Apply, then uncheck it again and click OK/Apply. see if that prevents the icon from appearing in the tray when you connect online again. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "*** Doctor Bill ***" wrote in message ...
