Default How do I uninstall Office 2000 and install Office Pro 2000

MEB, it has been a while since my last update. Other commitments have kept me
from doing little or nothing about my not serious, but 'annoying', problems
with MS Office 2000 Pro. As last reported, all the applications are working
OK, except Word, for instance, takes an unusual amount of time loading. At
any rate, I did go thru your modified steps of BC's suggested procedure, as
you wrote them.
***
Modified to look like this:

1. Use Office's own uninstaller to remove Office. Restart.
2. Use Eraser 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239938. Restart
3. Use MS Installer CleanUp utility http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
Restart.
4. Run ccleaner to remove entries other than ActiveX, tshoot, Nero if
applicable, createcd50 if applicable, Front Page Express, AV and firewall
program entries if applicable. Restart.
5. Check again with ccleaner for any entries again, if found not related to
above exclusions, remove. Restart.
6. Install Office Pro. Restart.

***
I did all the above as best as possible, but had to re-install Office 2000
Pro from the Folder where I had copied the contents of the CD. The CD, in the
Drive, just would not work. When I did get some promising signs and went to
Start/Run/(Drive/Setup an Error popped up 'Not a valid Win32 application'.
During the re-installation from the Folder, the same Error 1904 popped up
"Module C:\Windows\System\MSRCLR40.DLL failed to Register-HRESULT -
2147023739. Contact your Support Personnel."
Surprisingly, scanreg /fix /opt completed successfully, but not much change
in the size of User.dat or System.dat could be noticed. No other changes
appeared evident.
I am currently looking into the suggested knowledge bases to learn about
Error 1904 and see what can be easily done.
Thank you, MEB, for all your suggestions!

?Currently, my USER.DAT is 1.57 MB. SYSTEM.DAT is 10.1 MB.

BC's step-by-step suggestions:
?"I would make another backup of the existing system files before reusing

older backup.
Once you've cleaned up things with CCleaner as best you can, you can use a
Microsoft trick to mildly optimize the registry:
a) Restart in DOS mode (the prompt doesn't matter)
b) Enter: smartdrv (optional, for speed)
c) Then enter: scanreg /fix /opt
This will rebuild your registry files.

***MEB, BC....this is what transpired:
?I followed the steps, as suggested, but the command scanreg /fix /opt
stopped at 89%, before it was interrupted by this error: "Windows found an
error in your System files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting

work, then you will need to install Windows to a new Directory."
....

| That's a poorly written error message -- what is
| actually the case is that your registry, System.dat
| to be precise, is currently too large for Scanreg to
| fix and rebuild it.
|
| The only way to fix this, aside from just freshly
| reinstalling everything on your PC from scratch,
| including the OS, is to reduce the size of the
| registry enough so that Scanreg won't choke on
| it. As another poster has noted, Microsoft Office
| is notorious for adding an insane amount of entries
| to the registry.

| If you've already installed your Office 2K Pro, uninstall
| it, run CCleaner, and then see if you run Scanreg
| /opt /fix. If that works, then reinstall Office 2K.
|
| If this doesn't work or you hadn't yet installed Office
| 2K, you can try using a more aggressive registry
| cleaner, but be sure to make a backup of the
| registry before doing this. I've heard that RegSeeker
| is the best of the "aggressive" free registry cleaners,
| but I can't personally vouch for it. I also heard you
| may have to run it a few times for a more thorough
| cleaning. Here is a link to it:
|
| Then again, if your PC is otherwise working OK,
| it may not be worth worrying about having a huge
| registry filled with garbage entries -- it may be
| aethetically bothersome, but if you don't really see
| while using your PC, well...
|
| -BC

IMO, if your suggesting uninstalling Office again [which may not be a bad
idea, and perhaps the best idea], then running through your previous cleanup
{modified to include a final check with ccleaner and removing the first
deletion of the folder if Office uninstaller works] routine WITH the
inclusion of RESTARTS for registry refresh AFTER EACH PHASE, would be better
than using scanreg /fix /opt which MIGHT cause issue with some of the
installed programs.

Modified to look like this:

1. Use Office's own uninstaller to remove Office. Restart.
2. Use Eraser 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239938. Restart
3. Use MS Installer CleanUp utility http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
Restart.
4. Run ccleaner to remove entries other than ActiveX, tshoot, Nero if

program entries if applicable. Restart.
5. Check again with ccleaner for any entries again, if found not related to
above exclusions, remove. Restart.
6. Install Office Pro. Restart.
7. Update MDAC components including its updates if necessary
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279223/en-us and/or
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827424/en-us. Restart between installations.
If an error is encountered while installing Office perhaps this might be
needed first.
8. Go to Windows update and check for any needed updates. Restart if any
installed
9. Check Microsoft for Office 2000 updates. Restart if any installed
10. Report any/all errors encountered.

Okay, we all understand the "gee I have a life elsewhere".
So you still had the installation issues... typical...

Right on the / fix /opt not doing a great job with the registry, it can
only handle what scanreg knows how to handle. Beyond that it is worthless.

Keep us informed. Might be some final activites to be used, though we have
pretty much knocked out the uninstallation due to corruption and some of the
initial cleanup issues.

As for the MSRCLR40.DLL issue, perhaps your running across the "there's a
newer version already here" issue, or ... well I gave you some links, run
through those and see what's what.

Default How do I uninstall Office 2000 and install Office Pro 2000

BC, MEB and all who have had suggestions about my annoying problem with
Error 1904 during the installation of MS Office 2000 Pro, things are getting
too confusing for me to deal with tasks for downloading Jet 4.0
from[http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114]
or the latest MDAC for Win98, 2.8, presumably, from
[http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...b7d-b037-185d0
506396c&DisplayLang=en].
I was able to download jet40sp9_9xnt.exe, but, when executed, it did not
appear to have replaced files Msjter40.dll or Msrclr40.dll in the
Windows\System Folder.
When I issued the command: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Regsvr32 Msjter40.dll this
showed up:
“Msjter40.dll - was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not
found. DllRegisterServer may not be exported or a corrupt version of
Msjter40.dll may be in memory.
Consider using Pview to detect and remove it.
With Msrclr40.dll, this showed up:
“Load Librar[Msrclr40.dll] failed. GetLastError returns ox0000001f.
For curiosity, I renamed the files existing in the Folder and re-ran
jet40sp9_9xnt.exe.
A new Msjter40.dll appeared in the Folder, but no Msrclr40.dll.
I changed the name of the latter back to its prior name. Nothing new came
out of it all.
With MDAC for Win98, 2.8, Window does not appear to be validated as genuine.
As much as I tried, nothing happens when ‘Continue’ is pressed for
validation. However, at one particular point, it became successful. I was
given a validation Code to enter and was able to download a version
of MDAC for Win98. The properties of that file are(briefly):
MDAC_TYP.EXE - Size: 5.9MB
Version: 5.50.4132.500 - Thursday July 24, 2003
Description: Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor
Copyright: 1981-2000
Not sure if this might have been the proper Version to download, I tried to
get back to that site to verify or check on other options, but simply cannot
get back to that page.
I have not run the MDAC file and am wondering if this task is worth
pursuing. My Computer is rather slow, but is functioning and I would hate to
create more serious problems.
Unless any of you feels otherwise or has any specific suggestions, I feel
like ‘enough of this’.
I am very appreciative of all you have suggested and for your time.
Thank you!

MDAC 2.8 and its update(s) should still be available on Windows Update.

I think Microsoft's continuing resistance to allow downloading certain

Note The Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 download for computers that are running
Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows NT version
4.0 does include the ODBC Desktop Driver Pack drivers but does not
completely install them. To correctly register the ODBC drivers on your
computer, you also must install Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.6
or later. MDAC does not include these driver files, but MDAC does include
the core ODBC DLLs that are required to install the drivers and to use the
drivers. You must install MDAC after you install Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 to
correctly register these files.

SO TO FINISH INSTALLATION of the [any] jet update you MUST install MDAC
AFTER installing jet, or likely re-register the proper dlls. That would be
2.8 and its update. NOTE: you must restart after installing any of these
files [jet and MDAC] or they apparently will NOT be registered properly,
that's after EACH installation.

Information about Microsoft Jet Security Bulletin MS04-014
On April 13, 2004, Microsoft released Jet Security Bulletin MS04-014. This

Relating to the pview error aspect: this pops up when improper files are
installed, or files created for the 2000 and above [generally XP] are
shoe-horned into Win98. Pview is a diagnostic control tool found in XP and
other newer NT environments which allows starting, stopping, and otherwise
manipulating the OS and its services so files can be installed or removed.
Win98 has no such in-built ability as the "services" rely upon each other
for the OS operation. The only way in 98, is to shutdown and restart to
enable any modifications done within the OS. Refreshing the registry will
NOT accomplish the necessary changes.

From personal experience, I found it was best to leave the "Microsoft
installed" jet base alone, unless absolutely necessary to correct some
error. Even then, it was best to leave it at the installed version, not
upgrading to newer versions even if available.

As for your continued errors:
If you followed the proper installation procedures WITH restarts in-between
each installation, then you can either live with the errors or continue.
Likely manual re-registry of certain files will correct the errors [with the
proper switches applied], but that MIGHT require a lot more diagnostics.

Your choice of course, we'll help as far as you want to go...

So other than those errors, did the re-installation/cleanup go well?

Default How do I uninstall Office 2000 and install Office Pro 2000

Thanks, MEB, for your reply and the extensive information you supplied.
It will take me a "bit" of time to absorb any portion of it, I am sure!

To your question:
" So other than those errors, did the re-installation/cleanup go well?"
I assume you are referring to the instructions you posted on 1/20/2007:
?
1. Use Office's own uninstaller to remove Office. Restart.
2. Use Eraser 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239938. Restart
3. Use MS Installer CleanUp utility http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
Restart.
4. Run ccleaner to remove entries other than ActiveX, tshoot, Nero if
applicable, createcd50 if applicable, Front Page Express, AV and firewall
program entries if applicable. Restart.
5. Check again with ccleaner for any entries again, if found not related to
above exclusions, remove. Restart.
6. Install Office Pro. Restart.
7. Update MDAC components including its updates if necessary
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279223/en-us and/or
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827424/en-us. Restart between installations.
If an error is encountered while installing Office perhaps this might be
needed first.
8. Go to Windows update and check for any needed updates. Restart if any
installed
9. Check Microsoft for Office 2000 updates. Restart if any installed
10. Report any/all errors encountered.

I followed your instructions up to item 7. Error 1904 popped up during the
re-installation of MS
Office 2000 Pro. The latter steps and subsequent suggestions about Jet 4.0
and MADAC 2.8 are
what have had me started on a difficult task.
Outside of that error, which I ignored, the re-installation appeared to go
on. The applications have
been working as a simple user would expect them to. Even the 'scanreg /fix
/opt completed
without problems.
So I would say, all appears to be OK. Excel and Power Point respond quickly.
Word, on the other
hand, takes a relatively long time to come on stream. However, I have to
confess that, the
responses from several (non-associated) utilities also take time time,
initially. During the waiting
game, the machine looks rather active and I often wish to be able to see
what it is doing. All and
all, however, it is not that bad! After all, it is a rather old machine. All
of the above tells me that
all the efforts to improve on something may not fix all.
Again, thank you for your time!

that's after EACH installation.

Might check if your running indexing/Fast Find [was that included in Office
2000?]. If it is running, delays and slow downs will occur. Moreover, the
actual benefit, unless your creating massive amounts of files, is
negligable, IMO.

As for the rest: sound like most of what you wanted accomplished has been
done. Removed an unremovable Office Installation and re-installed, cleaned
up errant entries, and it now allows the registry tool to function. With no
readily apparent problems, sounds like you avoided the clean OS install and
re-installation of all the rest of your progs, at least for awhile.

Cross your fingers, and see what other help is needed, this emergency room
seems to be always open grin.

| Relating to the pview error aspect: this pops up when improper files

| enable any modifications done within the OS. Refreshing the registry
will
| NOT accomplish the necessary changes.
|
| From personal experience, I found it was best to leave the "Microsoft
| installed" jet base alone, unless absolutely necessary to correct some
| error. Even then, it was best to leave it at the installed version, not
| upgrading to newer versions even if available.
|
| As for your continued errors:
| If you followed the proper installation procedures WITH restarts
in-between
| each installation, then you can either live with the errors or continue.
| Likely manual re-registry of certain files will correct the errors [with
the
| proper switches applied], but that MIGHT require a lot more diagnostics.

| Your choice of course, we'll help as far as you want to go...
|
| So other than those errors, did the re-installation/cleanup go well?

Default How do I uninstall Office 2000 and install Office Pro 2000

Finder.exe, Findfast.exe, .cnt, and .hlp are included in the Office 2000
Pro. However I see no reference to 'indexing/Fast Find', as shown by you.
Msconfig or Running Tasks do not show any of that.
Yes, I am rather satisfied that there was no need for Clean Install or any
task for re-installing any of the applications currently on the system.
It would have been a nightmare!
It is a rather comforting situation, thanks, primarily, to you and BC.

|
Restart
| 3. Use MS Installer CleanUp utility
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
| Restart.
| 4. Run ccleaner to remove entries other than ActiveX, tshoot, Nero if
| applicable, createcd50 if applicable, Front Page Express, AV and firewall
| program entries if applicable. Restart.
| 5. Check again with ccleaner for any entries again, if found not related
to
| above exclusions, remove. Restart.
| 6. Install Office Pro. Restart.
| 7. Update MDAC components including its updates if necessary
| http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279223/en-us and/or
| http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827424/en-us. Restart between
installations.
| If an error is encountered while installing Office perhaps this might be
| needed first.
| 8. Go to Windows update and check for any needed updates. Restart if any
| installed
| 9. Check Microsoft for Office 2000 updates. Restart if any installed
| 10. Report any/all errors encountered.
|
| I followed your instructions up to item 7. Error 1904 popped up during the
| re-installation of MS
| Office 2000 Pro.

Aw shoot, still there, Okay, noted for later ref.

| The latter steps and subsequent suggestions about Jet 4.0
| and MADAC 2.8 are
| what have had me started on a difficult task.

As noted in my previous reply, installation order is crucial. If you
install jet, then MDAC must be installed afterwards, per the article I
referenced..

| Outside of that error, which I ignored, the re-installation appeared to go
| on. The applications have
| been working as a simple user would expect them to. Even the 'scanreg
/fix
| /opt completed
| without problems.
| So I would say, all appears to be OK. Excel and Power Point respond
quickly.
| ********
