Default Win 98 setup

Yes, I am aware that the other files in the win98 directory need to be
there, thanks. I need to know what files I need on the hd to boot to a c:
prompt without a boot flopy or cd rom.

Those files should have been placed there when you did the FORMAT /s
procedure. But to make sure...

Put the HD into your host desktop system. Boot to a Windows 98 (or ME)
Startup floppy, no CD support necessary, and then figure out what drive
letter belongs to the laptop drive. Replace "c" in the below command with
the appropriate letter (DO NOT do sys c: !)

sys c:

If you want to test on the desktop platform, you'll have to change the boot
order to first try booting to the laptop HD. You might even have to
temporarily make the laptop drive the Primary Master drive to accomplish
this test. However you accomplish it, you want to try and boot to that HD
while it's still in the desktop machine. The idea is that we want to make
sure the *drive* is bootable, separate from any other possible hardware
issues the laptop machine may be having. Once you can get the HD to boot on
the Desktop, then put it into the laptop. If it doesn't work there, then
check BIOS to make sure the Boot Order isn't messed up (Boot Order is the
list of devices that BIOS checks for bootable systems. It's commonly Floppy
first, HDD-0 next. But in that laptop, I don't know what it will say.)
