Anothter "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module unknown>" problem...
Hi there,
I hope somebody might be able to help.... Looking through Google and other resources this is an obvious "million times" asked question howoever I'm still not able to resolve the issue and iI have not quite seen the exact symptoms mentioned before. Using WIN98SE as of yesterday afternoon IE6 (SP1) failed to load "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem"... I was also unable to launch properly Explorer (not Internet Explorer) , "My Computer". Or "Control Panel" Each time I got a "Error Message: Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Unknown......". If I clicked on "Close" though twice Explorer would launch as you might expect and I would get the relevant window as expected. IE6 still failed to start. I tried a repair - no difference and finally returned to previous config which put me back to IE5. All worked OK - IE5 launched and Explorer, My Computer and Control Panel worked first time. I tried a Windows update to IE6 and the faults returned. I've tried some of possible solutions mentioned such as a new comctl32.dll, checking .cpl files deleting my .pwl file and so on but I still end up having the symptoms described - go back to IE5 and I'm OK. Any suggestions as to what might be my problem or where to look. Many thanks. |

If I understand correctly, IE6 did not install completely. The first thing
that I'd suggest trying when an application does not install correctly is to run the Msconfig utility, choose selective startup, and then deselect Startup items. Once you have restarted, I would then try the installation again. If IE6 did not complete the installation, then it's entirely possible that mismatched files are causing the problem. Before running the installation again, I would also run Ad-Aware or another Anti-Parasite program. You'll find links to several he http://www.aumha.org/secure.htm PattyL wrote in message ... Hi, Thanks for the prompt reply and input If I understand correctly, IE6 did not install completely. I should have added (or at least made clear) I had been running IE6 (SP1) without any problems for some time - something happened as of yesterday afternoon :-( The first thing that I'd suggest trying when an application does not install correctly is to run the Msconfig utility, choose selective startup, and then deselect Startup items. Once you have restarted, I would then try the installation again. I'll take a look at that option. If IE6 did not complete the installation, then it's entirely possible that mismatched files are causing the problem. It looks that way for some reason - I can't really recall doing anything that would have caused the problem to appear. IE6 was working OK as were Explorer, Control Panel and so on. Just which/what ! Before running the installation again, I would also run Ad-Aware or another Anti-Parasite program. You'll find links to several he Thanks - I have adaware on this PC and have just tried the latest versions of Grisoft AVG and Avast ANti-Virus wich have returned clean bills of health. |

Yes, that was not clear. Since you said unable to load IE6 and unable to
launch Explorer, I took that to be two different things - load as in install and launch as in start the application. Did you try restoring the registry from the day previous to the problem occurring using Scanreg /restore? Since you are back in IE5, the focus needs to be to try to get a good install of IE6 (assuming that you want to upgrade) and the best chance of doing that is to disable all startup items so that nothing should be loading up that would interfere with the installation process. PattyL It must have been a very recent installation of IE6 if wrote in message ... PattyL wrote: Hi, Thanks for the prompt reply and input If I understand correctly, IE6 did not install completely.
