Problems re-installing Office 2000
I am having trouble re-installing Office 2000. I do the re-install and get
almost to the end and get and error message: Error 1918 Error installing ODBC Driver Microsoft Text Driver (txt)(csv) ODBC error 13. I found this driver on the 98 CD and installed it. I can get Word to come up but when I try to get Excel to open I get the following message: Windows Installer failed to install the program associated with this file. Please contact your system adm. Any suggestions as to what to do? Thanks |

Hi Jerry,
Try d/loading and installing the most recent version of MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components). The d/load is available from he http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/downl...ault.aspx#MDAC After installing MDAC, restart, insert the Office 2000 install CD, open Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, select Office 2000 and opt to Repair Office. What 2 items do they have listed there that you see..? ..with W98x right? Hi, Rick. Pretty sure Lil Dave is talking about the page that Patti posted a link to. It shows MDAC 2.8 and then an update to MDAC 2.5 thru 2.8 just under the MDAC 2.8 link. It's not at Windows Update, the patch shows 12-15-03 dates for the most part, so if it was going to show up in the 98 Catalog it would have been there by now - it isn't, so I make a new folder for update 832483 and archive it myself. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832483 I'm thinking Lil Dave just wanted to let everyone know that 2.8 MDAC is NOT secure by itself. All MDAC versions need to run this patch. Buffer overrun exploit issue - again.... This patch isn't on the Security Update CD either, just missed inclusion by a few months I'm guessing. MDAC 2.8 itself IS on the CD, but the patch for MDAC is NOT. |

Hi Lee, After posting that message I realized after reading what was available compared to what was currently installed what I needed to do; although no thanks to the mdac checker since for the past year that was always showing errors and I could never tell what I had installed - but I just left it... Anyway today finally seeing what was available I just installed the latest v2.8 and then applied 832483 too and all went fine ..and now even the mdac checker works once again ...so all is well. thanks for the reply, Rick |
